NOTE: Beginning with May 22, 1997, not injured occupants were not tabulated unless the accident was a
fatal accident; therefore, not injured occupant data cannot be compared to years prior to 1997.
Beginning with July 1, 1995 accidents resulting in property damage only (PDO) were not tabulated unless at
least one of the vehicles was towed from the scene due to damage; therefore, total accidents and non-injury
accidents cannot be compared to prior years.
Beginning January 1, 1990 the property damage limits for reportable traffic accidents was increased from
$250 to $500; therefore, no totals except fatal accidents and fatalities can be compared to years prior to 1990.
Beginning with January 1, 1983, a death, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle traffic accident, is not
counted if it occurs more than 30 days from the accident date. From 1978-1982, fatalities were counted when
an injury resulted in death within 90 days of the motor vehicle traffic accident. Prior to 1978, fatalities resulting
from an injury accident were counted anytime prior to the statistical cut-off date for the accident year. It
should be noted that accident data indicates that about 99% of all deaths from injuries sustained in a motor
vehicle traffic accident occur within 30 days of the accident date.
Prior to 1978, an accident resulting in injury to or death of any person, TOTAL DAMAGE to the apparent
extent of $25 or more had to be reported. Accidents occurring on or after January 1, 1978 resulting in injury
to or death of any person, or damage to the property of ANY ONE PERSON to the apparent extent of $250
or more had to be reported. Because of this change in reporting laws, the total number of accidents and the
number of non-injury property damage accidents cannot be compared with years prior to 1978.
