LAMAR STATE COLLEGE
Negro students at Lamar State College knocked books
from the shelves of the bookstore last night, then
walked throug' the store pushing mercianding from the
counters.
The incident was sparked by the schools rejection
of several demands by the students.
Acting president Dr. Frank A. Thomas, said he
conferred with attorney general Crawford Martin and
announced that charges would be filed against the
students who took part in the action.
Other students who entered the store but did not
take part in the action would face suspension as
accessories.
Meanwhile, a mass meeting is scheduled for this
afternoon at Rice University to protest the school's
refusal to re-admit a negro student suspended in 1966
for academic reasons. A faculty committee unanimously
recommended he be re-admitted but the proposal was
vetoed by acting president Frank E. Vandiver.
In 1967 he attended Texas Southern and was one of five
stduents indicted tnx on assualt to murder charges
after a 1967 campus riot.
