Psychic Browne
dead at age 77
Sylvia Browne once
said she was just 3 when
she discovered she could
look into the future and
know what was coming.
For the next 74 years,
. Browne claimed to do
just that, predicting who
would win elections,
which celebrities would
be getting married, split-
ting up or having babies,
and whether people who
had disappeared were
alive or dead. Sometimes
she got it right and some-
times not. Among the
predictions that misfired
was one she made to talk-
show host Larry King in
2003 that she would live
to be 88. Browne was 77
when she died Wednes-
day at Good Samari-
tan Hospital in San Jose.
The cause of death was
not disclosed. One of the
most well-known psy-
chics of her generation,
Browne often appeared
on “The Montel Williams
Show” and in interviews
with King. She wrote doz-
ens of books, including
several best-sellers, and
she sometimes offered
her services to the FBI
and police agencies. *
MINNESOTA
1 of 5 children dies
after car sinks
The Minnesota State
Patrol says one of five
children rescued after
being trapped in a sub-
merged car in suburban
Minneapolis has died.
The patrol announced
that 5-year-old Zenavia C.
Rennie of Brooklyn Cen-
ter died Thursday. She
was one of five children
rescued earlier in the day
from a car that veered off
a highway ramp and in-
to a frigid pond. The car
was under water for up
to 45 minutes. St. Louis
Park city spokesman Ja-
mie Zwilling said the chil-
dren were unconscious
when pulled from the ve-
hicle. The driver was the
mother of some of the
children and stepmother
to the others. She made it
out on her own. One wit-
ness described seeing her
screaming for help.
WASHINGTON, D.C.
House puts focus
on classified leaks
A House bill to autho-
rize spending on intel-
ligence contains a pro-
vision designed to help
stem further leaks of clas-
sified information by
Americans with securi-
ty clearances. The pro-
vision, by Rep. Jim Lan-
gevin, D-R.L, would re:
quire the director of na-
tional intelligence to un-
dertake, “on an urgent
basis, a study to deter-
mine whether our in-
sider threat and secu-
rity clearance process-
es are sufficient to detect
both those looking to en-
gage in traditional espi-
onage and those seeking
to make sensitive infor-
mation public,” said Meg
Fraser, his spokeswom-
an. The study also would
seek to determine if “any
legal barriers exist to de-
tecting such threats in ad-
vance and what, if any,
legislative remedies may
be available.”
FLORIDA
Search suspended
for crash survivors
The Coast Guard is sus-
pending its search for
two people still missing
after their Mexico-bound
jet crashed into the Atlan-
tic Ocean off South Flor-
ida, officials announced
Thursday evening. Lt.
Cmdr. Gabe Somma said
the Coast Guard will con-
tinue to assist the Nation-
al Transportation Safe-
ty Board by recovering
debris but will no lon-
ger search for the miss-
ing victims. “There have
been no signs of survi-
vors,” Somma said. “Sur-
vivability beyond this
time is highly unlikely.”
The Learjet 35 crashed
Tuesday night into the
ocean about a mile off-
shore, and authorities
have recovered the bod-
ies of two other people
from the wreckage.
COLORADO
Federal agents raid
pot dispensaries
Federal agents raid-
ed an unknown num-
ber of marijuana dispen-
saries and growing sites
on Thursday in Colora-
do, confiscating piles
of marijuana plants just
weeks before the state al-
lows sellers of recreation-
al marijuana to open
their doors. The action
appeared to send a mes-
sage that federal author-
ities would be keeping
a watch on the industry
as a state law legalizing
pot is implemented. The
raids were the first in Col-
orado since the U.S. De-
partment of Justice said
in August that it wouldn’t
interfere with state mar-
ijuana laws as long as the
drug is kept away from
children, the black mar-
ket'and other states,
among other guidelines.
UTAH
Attorney general
quits amid scandal
Utah Attorney General
John Swallow announced
Thursday that he is step-
ping down amid multi-
ple investigations of brib-
ery and misconduct that
have hounded him ev-
er since he took office
at the beginning of the
year. Swallow vigorous- *
ly denied breaking any
laws. It marks a stunning
fall for a politician who
was elected with near-
ly two-thirds of the vote
one year ago and seem-
ingly had a bright politi-
cal future. But within his
first week in office, ac-
cusations surfaced that
the Republican engaged
in questionable financial
dealings with a business-
man under federal inves-
tigation for fraud.

AVIATION
FCC to weigh allowing
cellphone calls on planes
ByJoanLowy
and Scott Mayerowitz
Associated Press
WASHINGTON-Rules
against making cellphone
calls during airline flights
are “outdated,”‘and it’s
time to change them,
federal regulators said
Thursday, drawing im-
mediate howls of protest
from flight attendants,
airline officials and oth-
ers.
Tom Wheeler, the new
chairman of the Feder-
al Communications Com-
mission, said in a state-
ment Thursday that the
commission was propos-
ing greater in-flight ac-
cess to mobile broad-
band. The proposal will
be considered at the com-
mission’s Dec. 12 meet-
ing.
“The time is right to re-
view our outdated and re-
strictive rules,” Wheeler
said, adding that modern
technologies can deliver
mobile services in the air
safely and reliably.
Early reaction was
skeptical. Flight atten-
dants and others have
worried that a plane full
of chattering passengers
could lead to arguments
and undermine safety.
“Passengers over-
whelmingly reject cell-
phone use in the aircraft
cabin. The FCC should
not proceed with this
proposal,” the Associa-
tion of Flight Attendants
said in a statement in re-
sponse to the FCC chair-
man’s comments.
, “In far too many opera-
tional scenarios, passen-
gers making phone calls
could extend beyond a
mere nuisance, creating
negative effects on avia-
tion safety and security
that are great and far too
risky,” the flight atten-
dants’ group said.
American Airlines
spokeswoman Andrea
Huguely said the airline
A passenger checks her cellphone before a flight in Boston.
A lifting of cellphone use on airline flights will be considered
next month, matt slocum / ap
will wait to see what the
FCC does. “However, our
Wi-Fi at this time doesn’t
allow voice calls.”
In an online statement,
Delta Air Lines said cus-
tomer feedback indicates
“the overwhelming senti-
ment is to continue with
a policy that would not
allow voice communica-
tions while in flight.”
“Our customer feed-
back indicates people
may not want that policy,
but, of course, tastes and
desires phange, ” JetBlue .
spokesman Morgan John-
ston said in an email. “We
would prioritize making
the cabin comfortable
and welcoming for all -
for those who want cell
service and for those who
like peace and quiet.”
Henry H. Harteveldt,
a travel analyst with
Hudson Crossing, said,
“There are bad ideas, and
then there’s this.”
“Unlike the ability to
use their personal elec-
tronics and Wi-Fi from
gate to gate, passengers
don’t want this,” he add-
ed. “The constant chat-
ter of passengers on their
mobile phones has the
potential to further in-
crease tension among al-
ready stressed-out pas-
sengers. It will be a cata-
lyst for increased cases of
‘air rage.’”
