For third straight year, Tandy Corporation/Radio Shack
sponsors Youth for Understanding scholarship programChildren of Tandy Corporation/
Radio Shack employees may now
apply for scholarships entitling
them to experience eight weeks
abroad with selected host families
in the summer of 1986, thanks to a
student exchange program spon-
sored by Tandy Corporation in co-
operation with Youth for
Understanding, a non-profit or-
ganization headquartered in
Washington, D.C.
Since 1951, Youth for Under-
standing has provided educational
opportunities for more than
100,000 teen-agers interested in
learning more about other people,
languages and cultures.
Five children of Tandy employ-
ees will be selected by Youth for
Understanding to participate in the
program next summer. This is the
third year in a row that Tandy Cor-
poration has sponsored the eight-
week scholarships.
Those teen-agers selected may
choose any one of 21 foreign coun-
tries in Europe, the Far East and
South America. These countries
are Argentina, Belgium, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ecua-
dor, Finland, France, Germany,
Greece, Japan, Mexico, the Neth-
erlands, Norway, the Philippines,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Uru-
guay and Venezuela.
The following criteria will be
used by Youth for Understanding
in selecting the five scholarship
2winners from the numerous appli-
cants expected: academic
achievement, personal maturity,
quality of responses to essay
questions, personal interview, and
involvement in extracurricular, vol-
unteer and/or employment activi-
ties.
Each scholarship will include
round-trip international airfare,
orientation materials and a local
orientation session, counseling
services, placement with a care-
fully selected host family, domestic
travel over 500 miles from the des-
ignated departure point and a vari-
ety of special activities.
This summer-abroad scholar-
ship program is open to 14-through
19-year-old children of all Tandy
Corporation employees. The chil-
dren must have been born be-
tween September 1, 1966, and
January 31, 1972. If you are inter-
ested in this program to promote
international understanding,
please fill out-or have your teen-
age son or daughter fill out-the
request for application accom-
panying this article and return it to
Scholarship Administration, Youth
for Understanding, 3501 Newark
Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
20016.
The application itself must be
completed and returned by De-
cember 11, 1985.
Youth for Understanding will se-
lect the 10 finalists by January 8,1986, and announce the five schol-
arship winners by February 7,
1986.
Youth for Understanding admin-
isters all aspects of the program,
including selection of the most
qualified applicants and the host
families in foreign countries.
Mary Abell, daughter of Steve
Abell, director of Tandy Home Edu-
cation Systems Support Section,
spent a memorable eight weeks
with a host family in Tamines, Bel-
gium, located southwest of
Brussels.
Her host family included three
brothers and one sister ranging in
age from 13 to 18. The oldest
brother was the only family mem-
ber who spoke English, but he was
in America the first month Mary
was in Tamines.
One of the highlights of her trip
was a four-day visit to Paris,
France, with her brothers and sis-
ter, where they stayed in a youth
hostel and visited all the sights.
She adds that her experience in
Belgium gave her a new apprecia-
tion for her own culture as well as
foreign cultures. "To say that my
stay in Belgium affected my life is a
gross understatement," Mary
says. "I have grown so much and
gained new insights and under-
standing into my life as a result of
my stay." She adds that she really
appreciates the opportunity she
