A Message from John Roach
People Make The Difference
We are about to embark on an $80 million store
refurbishment program over the next five years.
'The Technology Store" look will help keep us
competitive well into the 1990s. Since this is such a
major program, we have been doing customer
testing to insure the new "look" meets our
objective of enhancing the quality of our
merchandise appearance and appeals to a broad
spectrum of customers.
One important result we got back from this
testing is that the single most important factor in a
store and its success is not the merchandise, not
the display, not the good values we offer, but the
personnel. Our customers appreciate and single out
the personnel in some stores over everything else.
The best performing store tested also received the
highest percent of "likes" for store personnel, the
highest percent of "excellent" and "very good"
ratings on the attitude and helpfulness of its
employees.
We've always known that people make the
difference at a location, but this survey reinforced it
once again. This shouldn't be interpreted to mean
that all the factors like housekeeping, display and
quality merchandise aren't important, but what it
does mean when you combine them with excellent
personnel is you get extraordinary results. It also
means that attitude and professionalism are
primary factors in building that repeat customer
base. Additionally, it means if you are getting beat
by others, the best and quickest thing you can do is
look for ways you and those working for you can
improve your customer relations skills.
It gets right back to the fundamentals that it's you
that's making your destiny far more so than anyone
else. People make the difference. That's why, on the
whole, we are very good but we can always be better!~
