Present: President Fran Vick, Vice President Paula Marks, Secretary
Darwin Payne. Recording Secretary Robert Compton, Treasurer James Hoggard,
and Councilors John Miller Morris, Clay Reynolds, Lou Rodenberger, Jim
Sanderson, Jane Roberts Wood, and former presidents and ex-officio
members C.W. Smith and Bryan Woolley.
Absent: Carol Dawson
President Vick opened the meeting at 11 a.m. and welcomed new
councilor John Miller Morris. She then called for a discussion of possible
nominees for the 2006 Lon Tinkle Award for Continuing Achievement in Texas
Letters.
After discussion of past recipients, including questions about names
of Fellows of the Institute and past winners of the Tinkle Award, members
offered several nominations.
(Current Fellows of the Institute are: Robert Flynn of San Antonio, John
Graves of Glen Rose, Marshall Terry of Dallas, and William D. WittliffofAustin.
Flynn and Terry were designated Fellows at the 68th annual meeting in March,
2004, in Fort Worth. They joined previous honorees John Graves of Glen Rose
and William Witliff of Austin. Under TIL rules, only five living Texas writers
may own the title. The late J. Frank Dobie, a charter member of the Institute,
was its first Fellow, honored by the organization in 1949. Other former Fellows
were Walter Prescott Webb, Karle Wilson Baker, Joseph M. Dawson, A.C. Greene,
Tom Lea, and John Edward Weems.

Among those named as possible nominees were David Weber,
Lawrence Wright, Allen Maxwell, Larry L. King, Stephen Harrigan, Annette
Sanford, Don Graham, and Bill Wittliff.
After discussion, the Council voted unanimously to offer the award to
