Tropical storm Delia churned her way ashore early today
southwest of Galveston Bay...causing a 6*-foot tide that sent 9
hundreds of families fleeing from their homes.
At least 2 deaths have been indirectly linked to the storm
today. A 13-year old boy drowned when he was swept off the
raft he was riding in turbulent water....and a 19-year old
coed from 4 Lamar University was killed when her car went out
of control in driving rain and struck a guard rail.
An estimated 1-thousand residents in and around Baytown
were forced to evacuate just before dawn...and the Civil Defense
reports 140 homes were flooded with water as deep as 4 feet.
This was reported to be the worst flooding in Baytown since
Hurricane Carla swept ashore in 1960.
But Delia never reached Hurricane stregth...and
didn't do nearly as much damage - as had been feared by
weathermen and civil defense officials.
