DON'NIE ROWLAND
LUtnai Of Tkt Wttk
It was surely hard to pick a
lineman this week but we finally
settled on Donald Rowland. This
is the second week for a guard to
capture the honors. The steadi-
ness of his play is our reason for
picking Don. All night long no
matter where the play went you
would find Rowland there too. He
made several outstanding tackles.
He was very closely followed by
end J. D. Atwcll. That was nico
playing Atwell. Oelke J. Wilder
Wiseman Little and several others
stood out at times too.

Co-Cnptain Carroll "Crazy Legs"
Tatom is our pick for the Billie
"back-of-the-week." It was his
driving slashing runs that kept
picking up yardage against the
Pirates and his steady defensive
play was outstanding. "Crazy
Legs" made the longest Billie run
of the night twenty yards when
he almost broke loose for a T. D.
in the third quarter. He came up
and met the ball carrier with a
hard tackle near the line of scrim-
mage more than once and broke
up many passes thrown by Frank
White. Don Burnham Stanley
Burnham Ed Cnntwell Willie
Crossland and Liston Todd also
stood out on offense and Helmer
and Ray Todd stood out on de-
fense. DIC Ltiti

The D.B.C. football team lost the
services of Lamar Hayes hard
driving fullback from Sidney this
week. Due to a change in his
Veterans classification and the
results of aptitude tests taken by
Hayes the V. A. decided it would
be to his advantage to go to an-
other school. We understand he
is going to Dallas. Don't know
which school. Here's wishing you
luck Lamar. Wo will miss you.

Texas A & I future D.B.C. op-
ponent downed the tough South-
west Texas Bobcats in Kingsville
last Saturday night 13 to 2. It
was not only their first loss but
the first time the Bobcats had
been scored on this year. The
Javelinas scored in the second
quarter on a pass from Rees to
Mathiel and in the fourth period
on a three yard end sweep by Har-
old Benke. A blocked punt gave
San Marcos their two points in
the third period.

Coach Abe Houston and his
Brownwood Lions had a welcome
lay off this past week-end. vHo
has quite a fow injuries acquired
in the last two games that need
clearing up. Big end Roland El-
ledge center Kenneth Pester and
guard Harold Mpore are the most
serious on the injury list. It is
doubtful whether Pester will get
back into the game Friday night
with the Harlandale Indians at
San Antonio. Elledge and Moore
should see service. Coach Hous
ton spent all last week whipping
the Lions back into shape after
the rough Sweetwater tilt and will
probably have the boys polished
up this week.

ball star Howard (Bullface) Har-

Guided by the brilliant quarter"-
backing of A1 Langford the How-
ard Payne Yellow Jackets slapped
a convincing 13-0 defeat on the
East Texas State Teachers Lions
Saturday night a Commerce. The
Jackets no doubt remembering
the 33-0 pasting handed then last
year before "homcfolks" outclass-
ed the highly favored Lions in
every department. In the offen-
sive department it was the bruis-
ing drives of halfback Brooks
Dozicr and the scampering of Mike
Gonzales and Charley Olson that
paid off. Early in the opening
quarter climaxing a 78 yard drive
Dozier drove over on three plays
from the Lions 15 for the first
H.P.C. score. The drive was
sparked by Gonzales' Olson W.
Byler and Dozier. In the fourth
quarter again headed by Gonzales
W. Byler and Tom Valdez the
Jackets climaxed a 45 yard drive
to "pay dirt" by a sneak over
center by Al Langford for their
final score.
The only time E. T. came close
was due to a pass interference
penalty against H.P.C. on their
30. The Lions failed to gain on
4 plays however and the Jackets
took over.
The Bobcats of Southwest Tex-
as State another Lone Star Con-
ference member comes to Brown-
wood Saturday night to try and
stop the Jacket's triumphant
march. Earlier this year the
Bobcats defeated Daniel Baker

keep the papers from congesting

son rushed wildly ubout accom-
plishing nothing und only adding
to the almost hysterical atmos-
phere of the office. Suddenly I
realized that someone should cull
n plumber. The water by now
wns gushing from the broken pipe
with alarming rapidity and wns
soaking nil of our practically- im-

rushed for the front office nnd the
telephone I noticed Thlclo on top
of the fourteen foot high stuck of
newsprint valiantly trying to cov-

It seemed nn eternity before I
reached the phone. Frantically I
thumbed the phone book culled

"Hello" drawled tho voice on

"Reckon ns how I might get

Disgusted I hung up. After
three more attempts I found n
plumber who could conic immediately.

I rushed again to tho back of-
fice convinced by now that a
flood was inevitable a flood in
violence the one in '38 when Brady
Creek hud rampuged und flouted
nwny our courthouse.
I wns shocked out of my pessi-
mistic thoughts by n loud crush.
Mr. Thlclc hud fallen from the
top of his stuck of newsprint up-
setting Billy nnd his paste on the
Mtuy down. Now he und Wily lay
sprawled in a pool of the evil
smelling concoction buried be
neath n ream of newsprint. Worst
of nil someone in the confusion
hud upset nnd spilled my three
thousand alphabetically arranged
stencils!
Eventually the plumber enmc
rcpuiicd the pipe nnd in due time
pence nnd order were restored to
tho Standard office. Everyone
took n deep bratb und with a sigh
of relief proceeded ubout the com-
paratively quiet business of print-
ing a newspaper. Morbidly I be-
gan rc-ulphubcting the three
thousand stencils.
It wns sometime the next day
that we missed our boss Smitty.
Why wns ho not with us ? We had
given considerable thought to the
mystery of his ubsence when to
our surprise n loud pounding wns
heard from the region of the back
door. We rushed to tho back nnd
opened the door. In trudged
Smitty worn nnd huggnrd be-

nevertheless. He hud chnsed the
