Red River girls defeated at World Series
by O^flncy “Broum
The Red River All Star team in the
16-17-18 year old girls division won
the State Championship in Terrell
recently and traveled on to represent
Texas in the World Series at Sulphur
Springs this past weekend. This is the
first time the Dixie League World
Series for this age group has been
held in Texas and it was an honor for
the team tp represent the state.
Play began on Saturday, Aug. I
with the team meeting Tennessee.
The two teams went three innings
with a 0-0 score. Joanie Swarts of
Talco was the first Texas girl to get
on base for the team on a perfect bunt.
Katie Hare did a fine job on the mound
for the Texas team. In the 4th inning
4 Texas errors saw the Tennessee
girls score 4 runs but the Texas girls
answered with 2 runs on a score by
Katie Hare and .Carmen Conder.
Candace Yaross came to the mound
for the Texas girls and in the 5th
inning the Tennessee ladies again
scored 2 runs on a home run hit. In the
5th Joanie Swarts scored for Texas
on a 2 base hit from Candace Yaross
to bring the score to 6-3. Tasha Brown
took over on the pitchers mound for
Texas and the Tennessee girls were
held 3 up and 3 down. Tennessee
returned the favor in the bottom of
the 6th holding the team to no score.
In the 7th and final inning and
Tennessee batting in the top a bunt
got the runner on and a fielder's choice
saw her score. Two puts followed
and the Texas team were at their last
bat. Courtney Caraway led off taking
her base on a walk, Kendra Hicks hit
a fielder's choice as did Joanie Swarts.
A one base hit from Candace Yaross
scored Hicks and Swarts. Katie Hare
got on a one base hit followed by
Carmen Conder who got on from a
second base error and scoring Hare.
With the score up to 6-7 and 2 outs
Leslie Spangler hit a fielders choice
to the shortstop who started to go
after Carmen Conder going to third.
She hesitated then threw the ball to
first base and Spangler was called
out. Fans could not have felt worse
sinceeveryone felt Spangler had made
the base by two steps. Final 7-6 Ten-
nessee.
On Sunday the girls returned to
play Virginia.
In the first inning Virginia, who
was the visiting team scored one run
on 3 base hit and a steal home. The
Texas team answered with a score
frtfm Candace Yaross knocked in by
Leslie Spangler. In the 2nd neither
team scored. Katie Hare did a great
job on the pitchers mound and field-
ing performance was great from the
team. Melissa Brown of Detroit did
an impressive job in center field. In
the 3rd the Virginia ladies scored on
a 3 base hit once more. Score 1-2
Virginia. In the 4th neither team
scored. In the 5th neither team scored
but at the bottom of the 5th the score
still 1-2 Virginia the Texas coach had
a confrontation with a player and
parent which resulted in the player

leaving the field. Following rule
checks and a 10 minute delay the‘
Texas girls took the field to begin the
6th inning. The upset was apparent.
The team who had no errors made 8
errors which gave Virginia 6 scores.
Score 8-1 Virginia. In the bottom ot
the 6th the Texas team hit 2 flies out,
I player walked and the final out
came on a pitcher to first base throw.
The disruption had done its dam-
age but the Texas team tried to regain
control. In the 7th they allowed only
one player to make the base and it
was on a base hit. A fly to Melissa
Brown, a throw from Leslie Spangler
at catcher to Joanie Swarts at second
gained an out and a fly to Kendra
Hicks gained an out. The Texas team
came to bat Kendra Hicks led off
with aone base hit followed by Joanie
Swarts who hit a fielder's choice to
the pitcher who got Hicks out on
second. Candace Yaross got made
the base on an error and Katie Hare
flew out leaving Swarts and Yaross
on base for the 2nd out. Carmen
Conder made base on an error and
Swarts crossed the plate to score. The
final out came on a hard hit hall by
Leslie Spangler fielded by the first
baseman. Final 8-2 Virginia.
These girls took some tough breaks
at the tourney but they must be proud
of being the State Champions as their
families, friends and fans are. They
will return for another try next sea-
son. Congratulations girls on a good
year.
A WESOME-Leslie Spangler of Deport makes a clutch catch as the
Texas (Red River All Stars) team met Tennessee in the Dixie
League World Series in Sulphur Springs Saturday, Aug. 1. The
girls were defeated 7-6 on what fans thought was a bad call. They
lost to Virginia on Sunday putting them out of the tourney but they
are still the Texas State Champions and are the Red River All Stars.
Great job ladies!

What’s your favorite type of food?
For most people, the answer to that ques-
tion has changed dramatically over the
past 20 years.
Only 34 percent of Americans
surveyed in 1976 acknowledged a prefer-
ence for Tex-Mex cuisine. Two decades
later, half of those questioned love sitting
down to a plate of enchiladas or fajitas
(and I would suspect that number is even
higher among Texans).
Similar growth in popularity can be
seen in everything from Italian entrees to
Chinese dishes. And while some folks
remain your basic “meat and potatoes”
type, our expanding culinary tastes can
only help Texas agriculture.
The global recipes making their way
on to our dinner table translate to more
varied uses for our food products. Texas
beef, chicken, pork, lamb, produce, grains
and nuts are all benefiting from the love
of new dishes and consumers looking to
try something different.
So with that in mind, it doesn't real-
ly matter what’s your favorite type of
food — as long as you're using Texas
products to whip it up.
