FIRE DESTROYS BUSINESS
At approximately 3:15
a.m., Monday, Jan. 31,
the Sims Dry Goods was
completely destroyed by
fire. The wood floor bu-
rned through the day
Monday, underneath ru-
bble of tin roof and other
debris. The Throckmo-
rton Voluntary Fire De-
partment battled the gl-
aze until daylight before
bringing it under con-
trol, so it would not
present a hazard to ot-
her buildings.
The building was one
of the last remaining
wood structures along
the same block of Min-
ter Avenue. J.H. Sims,
owner, succeeded Henry
L. Smith former owner
and had operated the
store several years.
The building, owned by
the Gilbert Estate of
Albany, Texas also had
the distinction of being
the oldest business pla-
ce still active in Thro-
ckmorton.
Sims said a cause has
not been determined for
the fire and that full
investigation can not be
made until cooling of the
embers.
HaWrove’s Clothiers
once located adjacent to
the north was also tot-
ally destroyed by fire on
the afterhoon of Sept. 7,
1971.
New business
Beginning Monday, Feb.
7th, Mr. C.E. Parks will
open a barber shop in the
Bishop Building located
just South of DeLong’s
Variety Store.
Mr. Parks is a native
of Benjamin, Tex. where
he has been a barber
for a number of years.
He will move his fa-
mily to Throckmorton
as soon as housing be-
comes available.
Bishop’s Furniture l-
Appliance will be loca-
ted in the same build-
ing-. ........
