announce the marriage of their
daughter, Karen Berry, to Joe
Bravenec, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Marcus Bravenec of Lolita,
Saturday, August 26, at 5:00
p.m. in the chapel of the First
Baptist Church of Corpus
Christi. The Rev. John
Bravenec officiated.
The bride wore a gown of
nylon organza. Scroll Venise
lace encircled the crescent
waistline and outlined the high
pleated neckline and cuffed the
full sheer Bishop sleeves. The
same lace edged the hem and
was repeated on the chapel
train. A spray of Venise lace
flowers held the veil of silk
illusion.
Maid of Honor was Deborah
Edge. Bridesmaids were
Cheryl Bravenc of Lolita and
Ellen Porter of Mathis.
The best man was Lacy
Newton, the groom’s brother-
in-law, of Victoria.
Groomsmen were Jerry
Bravenec, cousin of the groom,
of Alice; andLarry Le Buouf of
Vanderbilt.
Flower girls were Lanelle
Herbst, the bride’s niece of
Corpus Christi, and Sabre
Newton, groom’s niece of
Victoria.
Presiding at the register
table was Kathy Grant,
groom’s cousin from Victoria.

Mathis, Charles Edward
Bravenec, the groom’s brother
from Lolita; and Charles Allen
Sklar, the groom’s cousin from
Placedo.
The reception was held in
Hereford Parlor following the
ceremony. Those attending

Nancy Janine Lawson and
Jan Oran Sides plan to ex-
change wedding vows on
November 22 in Topeka,
Kansas as announced by her
mother, Mrs. Cecile Lawson of
Topeka.
Miss Lawson is the daughter
of the late Oliver S. Lawson.
She is a graduate of Washburn
University and now teaches at
Highland Park South
Elementary School in Topeka.
She will receive her Master’s
degree from Kansas State

Woman Promoted
James W. Duran, 23, son of
Mrs. J.R . Williams, Star Route
Sandia, recently was promoted
to Army Specialist Five while
serving with the 8th infantry
division in Germany.
Spec. Duran, a clerk with
company A, 1st battalion of the
Division’s 68th armor near
Baumholder, entered the Army
in September 1970, and was last
stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky.
Teachers College of Emporia
in December.
Jan Oran is the son of Mr.
andMrs. Oran E. Sides of Taft.
Jan was a 1958 graduate of Taft
high school. He graduated with
a degree in Industrial
Engineering from Texas Tech
in Lubbock. He has been
employed as an engineer with
the Kansas State Department
of Health for two years.

V. F. W. Post 3079 met in
regular session in the post
home on August 24.
Mrs. Buena Stendeback
presided.
Minutes of the July meeting
were approved as read.
Communications were read
and filed for further reference.
The group voted to sell
various types of stationery as a
money making project. Mrs.
Cliffie Hartman, Mrs. Johnnie
Mae Smith and Mrs. Vera
Jackson were appointed as the
committee in charge of this
sale.
Mrs. Stendeback asked the
officers of the auxiliary to meet
at her home on Saturday,
August 26 to discuss com-
munity and auxiliary projects
for the coming year.
Mrs. Noriene Edwards was
initiated as a new member of
the auxiliary.
The treasurer reported a
balance of $436.17.
Following the business
session, Mrs. Stendeback in-
troduced District 6 President
Beola Huber who was present
on an official visit and in-
spection of the auxiliary.
The social hour followed;
refreshments were served to 12
members and one guest by
Mrs. Stendeback and Mrs.
Sarah Curtiss.
Mrs. H. F. Jostes is visiting
with Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood
Jostes and family in Miami,
Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Woody Stridde
and family of Victoria spent
the weekend visiting Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Stridde and Michael.

Army Sergeant Jesse
Martinez, 23, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Alonzo C. Martinez, 1132
Nevada St., Mathis, Tex.,
recently received the Army
commendation medal at Ft.
Hood, Tex.
The medal was awarded for
meritorious service. Such
Mr. andMrs. Americo Cantu
of Germany are visiting Mr.
and Mrs. Jose S. Perez of
Mathis.

award during his last
assignment with the 159th
engineer group in Vietnam.
A supply sergeant in Com-
pany C, 1st Battalion, 41st
infantry of the 2nd armored
divisionatFt.Hood, he entered
the Army in 1970 and com-
pleted basic training at Ft.
Lewis, Wash.
The Sergeant was graduated
from Mathis High School in
1968 and attended Bee County
College, Beeville.
Summer Camp
Statistics Told
The 1972 summer camp
season at Camp Karankawa
closed on August 5 with a total
of 1,856 boys representing 114
troops attending camp.
Here are some interesting
statistics on the 1972 summer
camp season: Three hundred
sixteen completed Second
Class, 167 completed First
Class, 104 completed
requirements for the Star
Rank, 77 completed Life and 8
completed requirements for
the Eagle Awrd.
Seven hundred thirty-one
boys and leaders earned the
first year award, 395 the
second year award, 287 the
fifth year award, 35 the sixth,
10 the seventh, eighth, 2 the
ninth and 17 the ten year
award.
