Jazz concert at Lee College tonight
Three local jazz legends
will take the stage tonight
when the Lee College Jazz
Ensemble, Bayou Big Band
and Lamar University Jazz
Ensemble join together to
present, Jazz @ Lee College.
Offered as a credit course
for Lee College students, the
Lee College Jazz Ensemble
performs “big band” music,
both old and new.
In partnership with the
Bayou Big Band, an
advanced group for experi-
enced local musicians, the
ensemble hosts two major
concerts as well as special
programs and events high-
lighting area jazz specialists
and well-known soloists.
“It’s a great honor to wel-
come the Lamar University
Jazz Ensemble,” said Dr. Ken
Booker, director of instru-
mental music at Lee College.
“Lee College and Lamar
University have very close
ties. Several of our faculty
members, including myself,
studied there, and many of
our students have pursued
baccalaureate degrees at
Lamar.
“Hosting this concert not
only helps us to strengthen
these ties, but also introduces
Baytown jazz lovers to an
exceptional musical group.”
The resident student jazz
band, the Lamar University
Jazz Ensemble has performed
at conventions held by the
Texas Music Educator’s
Association, the International
Association of Jazz
Educators and the Music
Educator’s National
Conference in Miami, FL.
Under the direction of Dr.
Wayne Dyess, the ensemble
has won many festivals
including, the Wichita
Kansas Collegiate Jazz
Festival, among others.
“Lamar’s program will
include Freddie Hubbard’s
jazz standard, ‘Little
Sunflower,’ as well as
Gershwin’s big band hit
‘Summertime,’ said Booker.
“A special performance by
Dr. Dyess may also be fea-
tured.”
A professor of Trombone
and director of Jazz Studies,
Dr. Dyess holds degrees from
Stephen F. Austin University,
The Catholic University and
the University of Houston. A
former tour soloist with the
United States Navy Band, Dr.
Dyess is founder and leader

“Dr. Dyess is an exception-

who has worked to continue
the Lamar University Jazz
Ensemble’s tradition of
excellence,” Booker said. “It
is always a great treat to hear
him play.”
The performance will mark
Dr. Dyess’ second visit to the
college.
“In the late 70s, when I was
a student at Lamar, Dr. Dyess
brought the band to Lee
College to perform at Rundell
Hall,” Booker continued. “
It’s been many years, and
many things have changed at
both schools, however one
thing has remained constant:
Both schools are located in
jazz-loving communities, and
when a community supports
any art, it thrives.
“It is always wonderful to
see the Baytown community
support live music and we
invite the community to sup-
port us Friday.”
Jazz @ Lee College will be
held at 7 p.m. Friday, March
9, in the Main Performance
Hall of the Lee College
Performing Arts Center,
located at 200 Lee Drive in
Baytown. Admission is free.

BY EMILY MACRANDER

In a building committee meeting
Tuesday, Lee College regents were
scheduled to hear a presentation from
Performing Arts Center Director Scott
Vernon.
The presentation was truncated, how-
ever, do to interruptions from regents.
A primary concern was adjustments to
the PAC would be a matter for a future
budget, and since they’re not in a budget
planning time, they couldn’t discuss
budget without including other special
interest groups.
“We have a budgeting process in place
where everything is prioritized,” Regent
Don Coffey said. “If one group starts
coming up, telling us how they can do a
better job..there will be a ton of people
lining up at the door from the vocational
side, the technical side, the academic
side. All of them feel that they are as
important. This is a budgeting issue.
This is where the administration should
make the prioritization and come up
with a recommendation.”
Regent Coffey also said the prosceni-
um arch stage was built to be primarily
concert hall and that the black box, a
smaller space, was built to be used for
theatrical performances.
Vernon disagreed.
“Why buy a Ferrari and take the
wheels off?” Vernon said.
Since Vernon was hired by the college
in fall of 2011, he’s made some changes
to the PAC usage. The PAC manager has
a arranged an aggressive 5-show season
through the summer.
Shows are to include popular musical
Hairspray, comedian Ida Mae and a
Motown tribute show, SoulDoubt.
Some of the developments Vernon has
proposed for the PAC include:
• more line sets
• the ability to dress the stage and
mask back stage
• an inventory of equipment
• a lift for the orchestra
Vernon asked the board to consider
hiring a technical director, whose job it
would be to operate and maintain the
equipment that has already been pur-
chased.
By hiring a technical director, Vernon
said, student at Lee College enrolled in
the music co-op, academic co-op and
recording co-op programs would be able
to get hands-on experience at the PAC.
Students would be trained and able to
work in college and professional pro-
ductions.
Vernon also asked the board consider
a policy change that would change the
process by which a show is approved for
booking at the PAC. Under current poli-
cy, an event cannot be booked at the
PAC without approval by the board.
Following the discussion of the PAC,
the board briefly touched on a potential
real estate acquisition at 209 S. Whiting.
The property is on the border of the
college campus and recently undergone
a price reduction.
The board discussed using the proper-
ty to create additional parking spaces
and alleviate the congested parking situ-
ation on S. Whiting Street.
Considering the cost of the property
and of demolition - including the neces-
sary asbestos abatement - the regents
were concerned with the benefit of
acquiring the property.
After some jesting over the merits of
acquiring “another old house” the
regents asked Steve Evans to continue
looking into the property, without com-
mitment.
Answering Religious Error
Jesse Flowers
Error: Non-Christians Are Not Subject To God’s
Marriage Laws
Bible Answer:
1) Unfortunately for the adulterer, God’s marriage law does
apply to.Christians and non-Christians alike.
2) Examine closely Jesus’ teaching on this matter. “And I
say to you, WHOEVER divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,
and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is
divorced commits adultery’’ (Matt. 19:9). God’s marriage law applies to
“whoever,” and thus is inclusive of everyone!
3) If non-Christians are not subject to God’s marriage laws, then someone
please explain how those “of this world” can be guilty of sexual immorality
(I Cor. 5:10; 6:9-10)?
Conclusion:
Men continue to look for ways around the one exception that Jesus gave for a
scriptural divorce and remarriage (Matt. 19:9). All men must obey the words
of Christ. If we do not, those very words will judge us (condemn us) in the last
day (John 12:48).
