A FEW WORDS FROM THE EDITOR:
Some of the old Collin County records have been moved from the basement of
the courthouse to the new Collin County Records building in the 800 block of
McDonald (Highway 5) in McKinney. Among the records which were moved were the
old probate packets and the District Court packets. These are being entered into
the computer alphabetically by name, and should be easy to access when the syatem
has been established. The original marriage licenses have been moved, and have
been listed alphabetically by groom. You may have these original licenses for
the asking.
We have not printed abstracts from the probate packets in the last two
issues because access to the packets has been difficult during the move. We plan
to resume copying for the next issue. Since the packets have been rearranged, we
plan to try to finish those -from old Box 6, and then resume abstracting the rest
in some order yet to be decided. If there are specific packets that you would
like to see, please make a request, and we will try to find and copy it.
In the future, if you plan to use the old probate packets, remember that the
old Probate Index no longer applies. You can use it to look for names of
individuals, which can then be looked up on the computer, but the Box Number will
have no meaning.
Coming up next year: Chester Johnson has given us permission to print his
1960's inventory of Elm Grove Cemetery. Chester's list almost certainly contains
stones which were already missing when the cemetery was copied by Pitts, O'Roark
and Posey. We are planning to update the list to include the more recent stones.
Please send us your Collin County Bible records, old newspaper clippings,
old letters with genealogical information, cemetery inventories
anything
relating to early Collin County which might aid someone in his research.
