I Event scheduled for
March 1-3
Special to The Community News
Weatherford College is pre-
senting its National Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association Rodeo Thursday
through Saturday, March 1-3, at
the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse
Grounds.
The event will begin at 5 p.m.
Thursday and 7 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday.
“This is a great recruiting tool
for our rodeo team,” said Mike
Brown, WC head rodeo coach. “It
increases the awareness of our pro-
gram and the level of competition
for our athletes.”
Five universities and 10 com-
munity colleges will be sending
teams to the WC Rodeo.
Participating universities will
include Eastern New Mexico, Sul
Ross, Tarleton State, Texas Tech
and West Texas A&M.
Two-year colleges include
Clarendon, Frank Phillips, Howard,
New Mexico, Odessa, Ranger, South
Plains, Vernon, Weatherford and
Western Texas.
“This rodeo is going to demon-
strate great local support for our
program,” Brown said. “A lot of
Parker County businesses and indi-
viduals have helped us prepare for
this, and our faculty, staff and stu-
dents will be involved during the
event.”
Athletes will compete in bare-
back riding, bull riding, tie down
roping, saddle bronc riding, team
roping, steer wrestling, barrel rac-
ing, goat tying and breakaway rop-
ing.
The event is the first of the
spring semester for the NIRA
Southwest region.
The current regional standings
place the WC womens team in
second place and the men’s team
in ninth.
WC’s Savannah Todd leads the
women’s All-Around standings and
WC has the top three in break-
away roping: Cierra Kunesh in first
place, Todd in second, and Brooke
Sully in third.
Tickets are $5 at the gate for
adults; children under 10 are free.

Two-structure fire investigated for arson
I Aledo VFD finds
structure fully engaged
By Randy Keck
The Community News
A major structure fire at 201
Terrace Ct. East is being investi-
gated for arson by the Parker County
Fire Marshal’s Office. The home was
owned by D’Linda Evans Casey.
The fire involved a single family
home and a metal storage building
about 40 yards from the house on
Thursday, Feb. 16.
Morris Leondar, Aledo Assistant
Fire Chief, said both structures were
“fully involved” when the depart-
ment arrived.
As firefighters battled the blaze,
help arrived from Weatherford,
Cresson, Willow Park, Tarrant
County, Springtown and LaJunta.
In addition, the River Oaks
Fire Dept. manned the Aledo sta-
tion while local firefighters were on
scene.
“You don’t usually pull up with a
home fully-involved and a barn fully
involved,” Leondar said. He added
that with suspected arson, firefight-
ers must not only battle the fire, but
be careful not to destroy potential
evidence.
Lanny Padgett, an investigator
for the Parker County Fire Marshal’s
office, said the arson investigation is
ongoing.

gallery of photos from the fire can be found at www.community-news.com.
“If arson was involved, we pull
samples, test for accelerants, and
get statements from neighbors and
homeowners,” he said.
The homeowner has so far
refused an interview without legal
representation present.
“It’s reconstructing a home from
the ashes,” he said of the arson inves-
tigation. “It takes a lot of foresight.
What size was the house? Where
were the doors and windows? How
was it furnished?”
From there, “you can figure out
the process, which leads to a point
of origin. There you sometimes find
accelerant, a device, or wiring,” he
said.
The Arson Task Force was on the
scene during the fire.
Padgett said it could be two to
three weeks for test results from the
fire.

BOARD___________
from page one
Allen said the delay was good for
students, while everyone is trying
to adjust to the new testing formats
and the state continues to hammer
out the details.
The board also heard from Chief
Financial Officer Earl Husfeld, who
said the district was looking into the
possibility of refinancing some of the
bonds that were eligible in order to
take advantage of low interest rates .
He also informed the board
of a recent Coordinated Review
Effort of the Aledo ISD Nutrition
Department, in which the district
received a perfect score.
“They had about a 20-page check-
list and the district did not receive
one single demerit,” he said.
The board drew the names of
ten teachers who had been absent
two days or less and awarded them
with a $200 bonus as part of the
Terry and Helen Hyles Attendance
Awards.
Ag backer George Novak
addressed the board on the need for
an expansion of the existing barn.
“I can’t say enough good things
about what I see going on in the ag
program,” Novak said. “It is a great
and maybe even under-appreciated
part of the Aledo ISD.”
Novak said he believes the pro-
gram plays a vital role in teaching
kids about responsibility and respect
and he hopes the board will consider
taking action to allow room for more
kids’ access to the program.
Superintendent Dan Manning
said that around 50 percent of all-
school districts in Texas have now
joined in lawsuits against the state.
He said that the first portion of
the trial should take place in the Fall
and it may not conclude in time for
a resolution prior to the start of the
next legislative session in January of
2013, as was hoped.
Manning also said that begin-
ning March 26, students at Aledo
High School will be encouraged to
bring their electronic devices: iPads,
laptops, Kindles and other devices
to assist them in the classroom.
He said the program is being tried
as a pilot and the district hopes to
gather valuable information that will
enable the district to move toward
more technology based instruction.
Parents should not feel like they
have to go out and buy these devices
if their child doesn’t already have one
and it will not affect their grade one
way or the other.
But, he said, technology based
learning is the future; maybe not
immediate, but it’s coming.
“The days of kids coming home
with a backpack full of books is just
about over,” he said.
