PATTI PATANE
Will Seek
State Post
Mercedes resident Patti
Patane has announced her
intention to seek the post
of state representative, 51st
district in the May Republi-
can primary.
The legislature seat, now
held by Menton Murray of
Harlingen, takes in South
Mercedes, Southeast Wes-
laco, La Feria, Santa Rosa,
Harlingen and West San Ben-
ito.
Miss Patane is a South
Texas television news per-
sonality, recognized for her
work in drug abuse, health
and education.
She has been a speaker
before many groups, con-
cerning herself with today’s
youth oriented problems. She
seeks not only to define those
problems, but also to find
answers.
She is believed to be the
youngest woman seeking
public office in the Valley.
Is Senate
Candidate
G. G. Garcia ofMercedes,
a former Associate Direc-
tor of the President’s Cab-
net Committee for the Span-
ish-Speaking, Washington D.
C., has announced his candi-
dacy for state senator, Dis-
trict 27.
The senatorial district in-
cludes Brooks, Cameron,
Hidalgo, and Jim Wells
C ounty.
Garcia 34, in his announ-
cement statement said the
youth vote constituted a new
dimension in politics. He
said, “most of us have ex-
pressed concern over the
flagrant abuse of positions of
public trust in state govern-
ment. But the voter must un-
derstand that a simple de-
claration of principles is not
enough to insure good
government.
“Many profound changes
in our political, social, and
economic practices today
can be attributed to the in-
crease in social involvement
by the younger, dedicated
members of our society.
Their conviction that new
solutions can be found, not
through irrationality and
discord, not through hatred
or ignorance of the other’s
worth, but through reason
mutual respect is changing
the whole moral fiber of our
society.’’
A former migrant and as-
sembly-line worker, he was
educated at Georgetown Uni-
versity, a Jesuit-institution
in Washington D.C.
In the order of priori-
ties, Garcia says he seeks
to better the conditions of
the migrant and agricultural
farmworker, restore the
confidence of the voter in
their state legislative pro-
cess and the integrity of
their sovereign state, work
for constitutional revision
and the development of in-
dustrial capabilities in the
four county area.
