Last Saturday we were fitted out
with a blooded team from the
immense Livery Stable establish
ment owned and operated by
Messrs W BDoranSon and
quite early in the morning were
on our way to the Teachers Asso-
ciation at Bichland S rings All
along the road we noticed new
residences new farms opened up
and now lands cleared ready for
cultivation Not yet four years
ago when wo first travel 1 that
road as well as we remember there
wero not more than six residences
between San Saba and Bichland
bnt now the traveller of that beau-
tiful road is at all times in sight
of a residence and frequently has
a view of six or eight at the same
time The improvements along
the road are simply wonderful
but they bespeak the enterprise
and industry of our people The
broad and fertile farms hitherto
wastes but now inviting ogricult
ure bespeak the resources of our
county And Bichland is not be
hind in the steady race of prog-
ress The first time we visited
Bichland it rather had the appeal
nnce of an old deserted dilapida
ted town But now the spirit of
enterprise reigns supreme We
note with pride the many new
dwellings now stores and above
all a handsome school building
two stories high neatly finished
and furnishsd throughout with
elegant school furniture This
school with an enrollment of 150
pupils is presided over by Prof B
Beagan assisted by Miss Annie
Reagan and Miss Boxle Taylor
Among those doing business there
we found
Johnson Bros dry goods
B A Chapman drugs
J A Smith grocery
N C Brown Bro grocery
Mr Grekao blacksmith
J B Amis mill
T J Carter postmaster
J M Burleson physician
After the morning session of the
Institute the good citizens came to
the scboolhouse and invited the
visitors to partake of the hospital-
ity of their respective homes It
was our good fortune to fall in
with our old friend N C Brown
who took us to his cozy little cot-
tage where his good lady had pre-
pared just such a dinner as this
scribe calls a feast Of course
others had the good luck we had

always found them are ever social

on carefully considering the ques-

hoop skirts would somewhat be

they would seriously be in the way

SAN SABA COUNTY
Ed News As the couutry in
creased in population cotton rye
fruits nnd every farm nnd c rchard
product produced in tno Te niper
ate Zone was planted nd when
the harvest time came y ielded an
abundant harvest
Of the irrigable lands of San
Saba county the larger portion is
of a rich loam this is the > case in
the valley of the Colorado Biver
of the greater part of the no rthern
part of the county of large scc
has been seriously ill with in her southern part and of a
monia but under the skillful small portion of the up lands in
her central part The remaindiir
of the arable land is of a rich blacA
alluvial soil This soil is to bei
found almost throughout the val
ley of the San Saba river and the
valleys of most of its branches
The two soils just mentioned are
from two to eighteen feet in depth
and in many instances even deep-
er The truth is that it is by no
means n rare thing to see it thiity
feet deep These soils as a gen-
eral thing have a clay foundation
which is the secret of our lands
withstanding drouths bo well As
regards the strength of the two it
is evident that the black is the
stronger though harder to culti-
vate There are farms in the coun
ty that have been in cultivation for
for over twenty years and will and
do now produce from forty to fifty
bushels of corn per acre and other
farm products in proportion And
all of this without fertilizers of
any kind The department of ag
riculture called farming was for
almost two years 18S6 87 almost
paralized But the abundant rains
of the winter of 1887 and from
that time on havo given it an ener-
gy and robustness of life that it
never had before Indian corn
and oats grow in San Saba county
to perfection
San Saba has both the soil and
the climate adapted to fruits but
the chief among them is the
grape This countyissjmcinllx
ltipicd u p As fine speci
mens of this fruit nro grown here
and that too with so little effort
on the part of the raiser as the
world has over seen The day is-
is not far distant when the world
will know this fact and avail it
self of its benefits Every variety
of fruit that has been tried produ-
ces the very best results As to
peaches and grapes a few short
years will find San Saba a success
ful rival of California
Farming has been put at the
head of the agricultural list though
stockraising belongs at the head
and is likely to remain so for a
considerable time During the
early history of San Saba her cit
izens wero mostly devoted to the
live stock business Yith the
finest range in the world and a
favorable climate stock of all
kinds remained fat the year round
Such a thing as having a shelter
or feeding stock was never dream-
ed ot Though gras3 was free and
plentiful there was ono drawback
the Indians These roving rascals
stole horses and killed cattle when-
ever they felt like it It was no
uncommon occurrence for ono to
be set a foot the Indians stealing
all his horses Times have
changed Wo havo neither the
Indians or the free grass now
The couutry h covered with a net
work of wire fences We have not
so many stock as we oiko hail but
they are of a better breed The
fchort Imru lias to a great eitont
succeeded the lnighorn and
blooded hnites are succeeding the
Spanish plugs About the vear
1878 Rice Sloan introduced into
the county from Missouri n num-
ber of durham cattle Others have
sinco followed his exumple and at
present we havo n good grade of
cattle in San Saba We have a
superior grade of sheep and good
grade of horsps asses and goats
That every mans friend the hog
grows almost spontaneously For
a number of years every man put
forth his every effort to increase
the size of his herds no matter
what quality the grade might be
This they havo sinco found to
have been on error their motto
now is tewer stock and better
stock

This stone varies in color from

of it is very hard It can be found
with a sameness of hardiness and
is easily worked having no grit in
