says the Professor, “which might
have combined to make what na-
ture intended for food the most
virile poison that chemistry can
produce. I have found that
foods wo daily consume are so
fraught with germ life of a harm-
ful nature that I am almost
afraid to go to tho table. Butter

be found anywhere. Canned
goods are kept for years. I

milk. If we know nothing of
fresh milk, surely our know-
ledge is more limited in regards
to products that are put in cans.
The Lord Intended us to resort
to cans only to tide us over one
season until green fruits oould be
had again, but the canneries
don’t know this. There is no
law requiring them to stamp the
date upon their goods. If they
did it would kill the sale.” This
startling declaration should open

such an influence to bear upon
our legislative bodies that will

will disclose the real trouble with
the state. This being discover-
ed, it will be much easier to ap-
ply a remedy.—Beaumont Jour-
nal.
It is barely possible “that some
portion of the state’s revenue has
been extravagantly expended.”
It was thought so by the 29th
Legislature and in fact has been
thought so by every Texas Legis-
lature from time immemorial, but
not to be compared with a million
and a half dollars. It is human
to err, and even great and good
men make mistakes, just as Bro.
McOray did in crediting the
above extract to the Val Verde
County Mirror, instead of the
Herald, from which it was taken,
but we do not believe there has
been any graft nor corruption in
the present state administration.
The real trouble is that the rev-
enue to the state is not adequate
to meet the expenses of govern-
ment, and the present system,
depending largely upon taxes
from intangible assets, corpora-
tion taxes, etc., is not bringing
the relief so muoh needed. It
does not require a non partisan
investigation to see this, and

The packing houses in Texas,
last year, consumed over $2,600,-

third of which were supplied by
Texas, the remainder coming
from Oklahoma and Indian Ter-
ritories. And yet it is preached
that ho?-raising is easy and

commenced at once at Beaumont.
Its promoters are Dr. Guy H.
Reed and H. B. Cooper, who an-

the purpose of making money but
to “fill a longfelt want” and eoq-
eequently an aching void.
The commissioners of Val
