Mrs. J. M. LaMar and Mrs. Esfrl
Garner were hostesses to the Sun-
down Study club Tuesday evening
in the home of Mrs. LaMar.
Mrs. R. C. Bearden was leader
of the program and first intro-
duced Mrs. John King, whose
subject was “Cancer Research.”
Mrs. King opened her discussion
with the definition of cancer, a
stated that of all the dreaded d
eases, it ranked second highest in
fatalities, heart trouble being first.
“In spite of all research,” Mrs.
King continued, “the medical pro-
fession has not learned to control
cancer, and the doctors are still
in the dark. Cancer is not con-
tagious in the common sense of
the word, nor- is it transmitted
from parent to child. However, it
is a fact that cancer is prevalent in
certain families.” Mrs. King add-
ed that children are susceptible to
cancer, especially of the bone, eye
and lymph glands. Older people
seldom have cancer before the
age of forty. Concluding her dis-
cussion, Mrs. King encouragingly
stated tjiat cancer was curable by
surgery if suspected in time.
Workers are carrying on pn ex-
tensive research on lead to ascer-
tain what qualities in lead keep
people working in the handling of
lead from having cancer. Mrs.
King also stated that some symp-
toms to be noted were pain, swel-
ling, hoarsness or a cdugh. She
said, “A tumor must be doubted
until proved innocent first.”
“Eliminating Hazards in
the
Mrs. Earl Gamer. To live a bit
more safely at home, Mrs. Garner
suggested the use of*the proper
step-stool or a stepladder to reach
high shelves, and in the hanging
of curtains. “Nonskid rugs, pro-
perly waxed floors, adequate
lighting, and hand rails on stairs
will eljltjinate many accidents.”
Mrs. Garner, stated that all poison-
ous substances should be kept in
plainly marked containers, separ-
ate from medicines and food. She
also emphasized the great risk in-
volved in th? use of gasoline as a
cleaning fluid in the home.
A business meeting was held
with Mrs. Bearden, the president,
in charge during which reports
were heard from all committees.

tion of a Youth Center for Teen-
