County Cities
June Sales Tax Rebates
Post Increase Over '89
NET PINT. SAME PER. 1990 PMTS.
CITY THIS PER. LAST YEAR TO DATE
Aransas Pass $27,329.73 $25,970.37 $204,981.05
Sales tax rebates received last
week by San Patricio county cities
showed a big increase over the same
period a year ago, with every city
posting an increase. For the month,
county cities received $123,710.44,
compared to $106,475.97 a year ago,
an increase of $17,234.47, or 16.19
percent. Statewide rebates for the
month were up 13.07 percent. The
rebates covered sales made in April
and reported to the state comp-
troller in May by businesses filing
monthly tax returns.
Much of the month’s increase was
posted by Ingleside, which received
rebates of $13,171.17, compared to
$7,795.32 last year. Much of that
city’s increase may be attributed to
an increase in the sales tax rate
from 1 percent 1 to 1/2 percent effec-
tive Jan. 1.
For the year, rebates countywide,
total $875,919.98, up from $849,059.16
last year, an increase of $26,860.82,
or 3.16 percent. Statewide for the
year, rebates show an increase of
7.83 percent.
Four county cities showed in-
creases for the year compared to
1989, with increases ranging from
1.30 percent to 43.84 percent. Again,
Ingleside’s rate increase played a
major role in the overall increase as
that city showed a 43.94 percent
jump. Taft is up 3.12 percent,
Portland is up 2.66 percent, and
Odem is up 1.20 percent. Four cities
showed decreases ranging from 1.13
percent to 7.01 percent.
Portland, with rebates of
$36,158.77 topped rebates for the
month, followed by Aransas Pass,
$27,329.73; Sinton, $18,485.53;
Mathis, $15,013.24; Ingleside,
$13,171.17; Taft, $4,968.90; Odem,
$3,741.57; and Gregory, $3,531.33.
Dollarwise for the month, In-
gleside showed a whopping 68.96 per-
cent increase. Odem was up 57.54
percent. Gregory was up 24.80 per-
cent; Sinton, up 16.24 percent; Taft,
up 13.58 percent; Portland, up 12.24
percent; Mathis, up 8.73 percent;

Deer Hunting Regulations Changed
Burglaries, Thefts Keep
Sheriff Deputies Active
County Sheriff’s Deputies have
been busy the past month and a half
investigating numerous thefts and
burglaries.
Although there are still more than
twenty reports still pending, as of
Monday, most of the complaints
were off the theft nature, with some
minor domestic problems also on
record.
Saturday, June 2, a ’82 Black
Chevy Camaro was reported miss-
ing by Nueces County authorities in
the early morning hours, and was
later recovered by Deputy Hector
Sanchez on County Road 21. No ar-
rest was made.
Deputy Sanchez also responded to
a burglary in Mathis, along Route 1,
whereby an individual gained en-
trance to the house June 1st by
breaking a window in the kitchen
and then hauling off residential
belongings through the door. Three
long guns, a 20-ga. pump shotgun, a
.22 calibre rifle, and a 20-ga. Win-
chester shotgun were all stolen.
Estimated value given to Deputy
Sanchez was $640.
Sanchez investigated another
burglary of a habitation two days
prior on the 31st of May on Bayview
Drive in Mathis. Access to the house
was made apparently by use of a
screwdriver prying open the back
door. The home was ransacked, with
all bedroom drawers being opened
and mattress overturned. Six
weapons, including jewelry, a VCR,
several survival knives, a sewing
machine, ladies’ and men’s jewelry
were taken with an estimated value
of $13,950.
An incident in a quick-turn theft
came May 22 when the department
received a complaint that a Go-Kart
valued at $275 was taken from in the
front yard near the community of
old San Patricio.
The weekend of May 4-5 was a
busy one for theives. A 1980 4 h.p.
Mercury Outboard Motor was stolen
when the thief broke into a storage

building in the 400 block of Sunset in
Ingleside. The ^Saturday following a
lawnmower was stolen in Aransas
Pass at a local trailer park. Suspects
were driving a brown 1986 Buick
4-door. Also on that date, along
Highway 77 in Odem, a man
reported that while he was in a local
cafe eating, a 71-2’ Bass fishing boat
was stolen from on top of a larger
boat on a trailer. The complaintant
valued the Bass boat at $462.
Sunday, May 6, a woman in Taft
reported that her home had been
broken into on Rubio St., reporting a
ring in a box valued at $450-500 miss-
ing.
There was a burglary of a building
on County Road 35 and 630 Thurs-
day, May 4th, netting thieves
numerous pieces of contractor’s
equipment. “What they did was use
a wheel-barrow and transported all
the pieces to the fenceand loaded it
up, then they took wheel-barrow,”
Chief Deputy Lee Duckworth said.
Missing from that site were two
Honda power plants, valued at $748
and $500 respectively, a cutting
torch, $300; a pump, $100; and a Skil
saw, $98 plus the wheel-barrow.
“Most of these individuals already
have already found someone ready
to buy it, or they peddle it off to so-
meone out of the area,” Chief Depu-
ty Duckworth said, “In the case of
jewelry, where it can’t readily be
identified, they will sell it to a pawn
shop at a greatly reduced value, or
they just might try to peddle it on the
street or another outlet.”
All of the burglary cases are still
under investigation.
Changes in archery deer hunting
regulations, modifications to the
antlerless permit system and a pro-
hibition of running deer with dogs
were among hunting regulations
adopted by the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Commission last week.
The commission voted unanimous-
ly to enact a statewide ban on hun-
ting deer with dogs, a practice which
was allowed in 10 East Texas coun-
ties during the last half of the 1989-90
hunting season. The ban, along with
other hunting regulation changes,
will be effective Sept. 1,1990.
Department officials cited a study
showing that deer densities were
lower in areas where hunting with
dogs was permitted, compared to
areas of similar habitat where the
practice was prohibited.
The commission also adopted
white-tailed deer archery season
dates that will not conflict with
general season dates, a situation
that occurred last year because of
calendar variations. This year’s ar-
chery season will be Oct. 1-31, and
the general season is set for Nov. 3,
1990 through Jan. 6, 1991. The
whitetail season in South Texas is
set for Nov. 10 through Dec. 2.
Officials announced a new concept
in management of the antlerless
deer harvest in all or portions of 14
counties. Informally referred to as
“doe days,” the system allows the
taking of antlerless deer without
landowner-issued permits on
specified days during the hunting
season.
In Gonzales, DeWitt, Wilson,
Karnes and portions of Guadalupe,
Lavaca and Colorado Counties,
antlerless deer may be taken only
during the first nine days and final
nine days of the general season. In
Caldwell, Bastrop, Lee, Fayette,
Washington, Waller, Austin and por-
tions of Guadalupe, Lavaca and Col-
orado Counties, antlerless deer may
be taken only during the first two
days and final two days of the
general season. The commmision
also reduced the buck bag limit from
two per season to one in Gonzales,
DeWitt, Wilson, Karnes and
Guadalupe Counties.
