The Outstanding High School Boy
was Michael Bordayo, a 1990
graduate of Mathis High School. He
served on the Cinco de Mayo 1990
Committee and the Mathis Chamber
of Commerce 1989 Christmas Pro-
gram.
Kerrie Merrell, a 1990 graduate of
Mathis High School, was chosen as
Outstanding High School Girl. She
has been active in numerous clubs
and organizations.
Other student nominees were
Frank Gonzales, Jeremias Garciar
Dan Greenwood, Belinda Ganceres
and Debbie Cavazos.
Vickers said, “These are the peo-
ple who have been upfront in the
community but have never been
recognized. Unfortunately they
can’t all be winners.’’
He said a committee within the
chamber made final decisions on the
nominees based on reports given by
the nominees’ peers. “This is very
much a peer-elected program,”
Vickers said. “I think it means more
when your peers elect you.”
All winners received certificates,
and a 10-year plaque with the names
engraved that will be displayed at
the First State Bank of Mathis.
In addition to the awards in the
seven categories, the chamber
recognized Mayor Eva Medrano for
her cooperation with chamber func-
tions. The V.F.W. Post #3079 and
V.F.W. Auxiliary also received
special recognition for contributions
and support to civic groups in the
community. Vickers said the V.F.W.
Post returns about one-third of their
income received through BINGO
back to the community to needy pro-
grams and causes.
“No one has ever recognized the
V.F.W. for doing this. We felt it was
the chamber’s responsibility to do
so,” Vickers said.
The guest speaker for the awards
banquet was Representative Robert
Earley. He spoke on economic
development, and said any
economic or community develop-
ment program had to begin at the
local level. Earley assured the group
that his office and staff would assist
the city in any way they could.

No matter what your home costs, it’s not a bargain if the utility bills aren’t economical. When
you’re house hunting, look for a home with efficient natural gas heating, water heating, cooking,
and clothes drying. Because natural gas, when compared to electricity, can save the average
family $6700 in operating costs over the lifetime of the appliances. And ^——
that’s a fortune.
When you’re looking for the perfect place to live, look for an Affordable
Gas Home. After all, it’s not just a home. It’s an investment. A DivjSj0n 0f Arkia, Inc.
