UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS~
Using This Catalog
Welcome to UNT! As a university student, the catalog is where you turn for information about your
degree, ways to get involved, graduation requirements and much more! The catalog can be a useful
tool, or an overwhelming amount of information. Following are some tips to help you to keep it
useful, and not overwhelming.
In the first one-third of the catalog, you will find general information about the university, such as
estimated tuition costs, admission requirements, course transfer information and housing tips. Look
for a section at a glance at the beginning of each chapter in "The Essentials" section.
School and college information is in the middle one-third of the catalog. The University of
North Texas is comprised of 12 academic units known as schools or colleges (such as the College
of Arts and Sciences or the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management). In this section,
you will read about requirements that certain schools or colleges have in addition to University
of North Texas requirements. This may include having a certain GPA, becoming a pre-major and
taking specific classes before being allowed to declare a certain major. You will find information on
advising and degree requirements. For programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College
of Engineering and the Mayborn School of Journalism, you will also find examples of possible
four-year plans. (You should see an advisor in the college of your intended major, or in the College
of Arts and Sciences if you are undecided about your major, for a more definite plan to obtain the
proper courses and their prerequisites.)
The final one-third of the catalog is where you will find course descriptions. Look for the guide
on page 384 to help navigate this section. The last few pages of this section include faculty listings,
an index, a map of the UNT campus and information on the university's accreditation. These pages
can be located by using the Table of Contents.
