Great things are in store for this
country, and tho Telephone will bo

—Mr, T. J. Matthews and family, of
Tohuncanna, are visiting friends and
relatives in Van Zandt county, (his
old homo.) Mr. Mntthewssays that he
likes Van Zandt county and the peo-
ple ns well ns any place ho ever lived
at. But an advantage ho has at Te-
huaeanna, he can educate his chil-
dren there in a higher school. Why
can’t wo linve just ns good a school
here ns at Tohuncanna, or any other
place? All we need is tho teachers.
Let's all pull together, harmonize and
build up a school second to none. It
would induce people already hero to
rein tin and also people at other places
to come to Canton. This with mani
other great advantages we have would
tend to promote or growth. Gentle-
men you should think of this grand
fact, and let it tako action as soon as
is convenient. Tho earlier you take
action the better.
—Last Monday night a posscc of
men, about Sevan in number, raised
considerable rain at Jim Ross’ (color-
ed) living live miles ninth-west from
Canton. Theposseo demanded the
door open, but did not wait for any
rcsponce, and opened it themselves—
drew their pistols on him (Boss,) and
his wife. They asked for Ben Ful
bright and Oliver Shaw, (colored)
Three of the weapons were held on
him and his wife, while one of the
possec went to the gun-rack, and got
his gun. They then went out doors
and fired several shots at a lightning
rod on tho house. They shot a glass
lamp to pieces, which was setting on
the mantle hoard—the lamp explod-
ed, and he (Boss) threw it out doors—
they, the (pacsee) threw it under the
house, it is believed to set the house
on fire. This is his (Boss) statement,
and he positively says that ,i.o knew
none of them. It is believed by tunic
however, that lie docs know who they
are, but is afraid In tell, as they told
him never to say anything about what
had been dime or said, and if lie did
that they would kill him immediate-
ly afterward. Jim Boss has the name
of being an honest negro—attends to
his own business, and tho trouble
can’t be accounted for. l’robalily it
will out yet.
—On Wednesday night, last, about
I) o’clock, some unknown parties,sup-
posed to bo the same gang as men-
tioned in the iiliov i article, fired two
shots at and hit Ben. Fulbright and
Boh. l’ruit, both colored. I’ruit was
staling out doors playing a violin,
and Fulbright was in tho house sit-
ting by a table, reading a newspaper.
After l’ruit had quit playing the vio-
lin and started in tho house, as he ill-
tered the door, he was shot with sev-
enteen buck-shot-nil* entering, his
right hip. lie fell to tho floor, help-
less. In about five seconds another
gun fired through tho crack at Ful-
bright, seven buck-shot entering his
loft shoulder. He (Fulbright) is not
as seriously wounded ns Fruit. All
the shot still remain in l’ruit, hut
Fulbright got them all out of him.
This happened at a little cabbin oc-
cupied by Fulbright, on J. J. L'tts’
plantation, about two hundred yards
from town.
—Last Thursday was seen two men
riding through the odgo of town,
which threw suspicion on them. The
officers thought they were of a desper-
ate character, and did not hisitnte a
moment in proceeding to tako them
in. They (tho two men) rododown to
the crook, hitched tlioir horses and
conducted to a washing-placo in the
creek, where they taken a bat ho.
About 20 minutes after they passed
through town, tho officers and every
body else who could rako up a horso
and fire-works put out in hot pursuit
of them. They rodtfup where their
horses wore hitched, and on not see-
ing them, they were at a loss to know
of their whereabouts. Nevertheless
they all formed a lino and proceeded
to mako a search for them. In a few
minutes they discovered them at tho
above named place. They demanded
them to hold up their hands, mid ns
they approached nearer they discov-
ered who they were, and just such an
other “mob” of men's feeling, wo im-
agine never existed. Of course they
felt liko telling them they were hun-
ting the calves. It proved to ho Ru-
fus and Charlie Spears, two as nice
and clever young men as this county
affords. No doubt they felt vexed
and do yet about it, but the officers
and people wero horns.tly mistaken.
Gems of thought from Sum Jones.
No man was ever made a Christiau

No mu n ever went to sloop a sinner
and woke up a Christian,
One nmi says, ”1 have quit swear

wretch you what did you ever want to
swer for, anyway ?
Good hard sense and religion, when
well mixed, make the grandest and
best compound on earth.
I would rather he a dead lion than
a live dog.
I believe this progressive ago is re-
marka'ulo for everything except roli-
gion.
Give mo a progressive theology, hut
let mo have religion in all its power
and purity.
Many a great big soul, weighing200
pounds, in this country, oil God’s
scales won’t weigh an ounce.
1 would not have you work all tho
week for the devil and come up on
Sunday to settle.
I have a supreme contcmt fora two-
legged, tailless dog, and wo liavo a
good many of them running around
the country—you need nothltish, sis-
ter, your husband may ho ono of
them.
I pity those men who are always
praying for faith. 1 would as soon
pray for Irish potatoes ns for faith.
If God slioml issue out a sufficient
ration of irrseo to Iasi a week the old
devil would liavo half of it before
night.
I tell you red liquor and Christian!
tv won’t stay in the same hide at the
same time. 7 know this, for I have
been there. ,
In Georgia nobody blit an infernal
scoundrel will sell whiskey, and nobo-
dy but au infernal fool will drink it
I have™ card a great many bard
things said about tho devil, but I
have nover heard him accused of drin-
king whisky.
If some men could get a good, ag-
gravated ease of religion it would
make them unhappy; they would
have to go to [laying their debts, te ll-
ing the truth, doing ligli, and that
would not suit them.
The three richest men ever known
in this country—Astor, Stewart and
Vanderbilt—couldn’t go into partner
ship in hell and buy one drop of wa-
ter to cool thcir.tongues.
