Khartoum ha* fallen into the hands
of the belligerent El Mnhdi, and genuine con-
sternation prevails In the English cabinet.
Gen. Wolseley gives official confirmation to
the report. Gen. Gordon is suppled to have
been killed, or at beat, to have fallen into the
hands of the enemy. A native reports that
K1 Mahdl had 800,000 men in the vicinity of
Khartoum; that he introduced a number of
his emissaries into the city, and that, these
emissaries mingled freely with the native
troops under Gen. Gordon, and that by bribes,
threats and working on their religious feelings,
induced them to mutiny; that 7,000 of tlie
garrison deserted to the rebels, leaving Gor-
don only 2,500 faithful soldiers. With this
small force he attempted to hold the city
against El Malidi's great army, but after si v-
ere fighting, In which a large number nf rebels
were killed, he was compelled to surrender.
Mr. Wolsloy lias boon placed in su-
preme command of operations in the Soudan
with full •authority to take all measures that
are necessary to regain what was lost in the
fall of Khartoum; also to rescue Gen. Gordon,

the Soudan campaign, and Gladstone’s resi-
