A Keith Carolina Editor's Speech
on Tf oman.
Long to be remembered in
the annals of the North Carolina
! vU'
Press Convention will be the
meeting at Ashvillc. 'Naturally
an editor and a North Carolinian
has a supreme veneration lor
the fair sex but when beauty
comes in troops and battalions
he yields willing obedience and
hprnmM mrnvirafwl wirri trip
perfume of loveliness. In this
condition must have been that
member who made the follow
ing response to the toast of
woman:
He advanced to the front of
the platform blandly smiling
he said!"
"Woman! Oh! Woman!"
"Whose fragrance fills the bud ;
Whose beauty stars the earth
And lights the hearths of happy homes
With loveliness and wortlu
"I am at a loss to know Mr.
President why I have been call-
ed on to respond to the toast of
woman. I am not a woman;
nor have I ever been one
Cheers. Yet I am closely re-
lated to that sex. I have the
honor of calling one by the en-
dearing name of mother ap-
plause three claim me as sisters.
iLauehter.lI mean I claim them
as sisters and one (only one so
lar) has honored me with her
heart and hand vociferous ap-
plause. My countrymen can
you tell me why the young un-
married men of the press are
called on to respond to such a
toast as this? What do they
know of her sweet by-and-by?
Of the impressiveness of the
rolling pin or the sweeping
power of the broom handle when
wielded by her precious be-
jeweled hands ? Continued ap-
plause. Sirs in the language
of the greatest of living Amerij
can statesmen Zeb. Vance
who rcsently plucked a lovely
flower from the weeds of widow
hood cheesy for Vance the
man who fails to respond to
woman is not fit to occupy the
proud preeminence of a mem-
ber of the North Carolina Press
Association and deserves the
condign punishment of.being
put in the United States Reve-
nue Service and sent after moon-
shiners. Deafening applause.
Sirs ever since the' invention of
the corset woman has beenln
iavor of the prose; that accounts
why the veteran editor of the
Raleigh Observor has such a.
reduced form. Cheers and
laughter. (
"My countrymen womanns1
as chaste as an icicle yet not
so cheerless; as pure as the
snowflake though not so cold.
Sirs she is the ray of the sun-
beam that concentrating its fo-
cal power on the heaviest iron
bridge can lift its weightiest
beams from their sockets and
even old ocean from its .briny
Deo. rier smiles can raise up
a map lrom the deepest gloom
or the heaviest sea of despon
oency. oils sue 15 ukc me
rainbow that spans the heavens
telling of future joy and peace
and sunshine amid the darkest
surroundings. She is an Iris in
the storm of life to man. Tre-
mendons cheering the ladies
waving their fans and handker-
chiefs. Without her influence
and example Harrell would ne-
ver have been a poet Battle a
statesman or Stone a philoso-
pher. Laughter. The North
Carolina Press Association
would lose its guiding star its
chart and compass and the
North Carolina Farmer would
suspend and Ennis "flee the
realm." Cheers and laughter.
When I am summoned hence as
a mother's fond caress greeted
me on my entrance into the
world so let a wile's soothing
hand wipe the dews of death
from my brow and smooth the
rolling waves of Jordan until I
reach the other shore safely.
Were this Convention open now
to decide wheather we would
have "woman without the world
or the world without woman"
one unanimous vote would be
recorded for "woman" though
some of the members might say
they were for mart yet as for
me give me woman and "you
may have the "whole world and
the rest of mankind" including
the mother in law."
(The speaker retired amid a
shower of bouquets.)
