contest will be held Tuesday,
July 18 at 8:30 p. m. in the
local rodeo arena.
Entries will be taken at this
time and the girls will be
judged by out of town judges
on horsemanship, appearance,
and personality.
To qualify the girl must be
a student in the White Deer-
Skellytown High School.
The Rodeo Queen will
receive a sterling silver belt
buckle. She will lead the
parade to be held on Saturday
in downtown. She will also
be leading the grand entry
in the rodeo all three nights.
She is to reign at all events
sponsored by the White Deer
Riding Club.
Miss Jan Davis has been the
1977-78 Rodeo Queen.
Commissioners Vote To
Keep Same Tax Rate
The Carson County Com-
missioners Court, after making
preliminary budget studies,
has voted to keep the tax rate,
at 13. 5 cents per $100 valuation
for the 19 78- 79 fiscal year.
At the same meeting, the
court tabled requests of Tax
Assessor-Collector Lloyd Ster-
ling and County and District
Clerk Sue Cockrell for salary
increases for their deputies.
In other business, the court
took official note of a letter
from the State Department of
Highways and Public Trans-
portation designating 3.1 miles
of Interstate 40 east and west
of Groom and U. S, 60 from the
’ Potter County line to FM2373 as
roadways to be blacktopped
during 1979.
The commissioners also voted
to accept the bid of Ralph
Randel Motor Co. of Panhandle
to supply an automobile for use
by the deputy sheriff at Skelly-

Coffee Will Honor
Mrs. Margaret Simmons
An Appreciation Coffee
honoring Mrs. Klargaret Sim-
mons will be held at the
White Deer City Hall, Saturday
July 8 from 10-12 in the morn-
ing.
Mrs. Simmons has been an
employee of the City since
1962 and the City Secretary' the
past seven years and also servec
as Corporation Court Judge.
All friends are invited to
attend the coffee. Later in the
summer Mrs. Simmons will be
moving with her family to
El Paso where Mr. Simmons
will be employed with the
Socorro Independent School
System.
Free Blood Pressure
Clinic To Be Today
All residents are reminded
of the free blood pressure
check to be held at City Hall
today starting at 10 a. m. to
12 noon.
The free clinic will be con-
ducted by licensed vocational
nursing students from Frank
Phillips College in Borger and
is offered by the City of White
Deer as a public service.
All area residents are invited
to attend the clinic, which
should be of special interest to
the senior citizens.

Deer Rodeo and free barbecue which will be held again this year
starting July 27, 28 and 29.
Rodeo fever is starting to
mount in the Texas Panhandle
‘ again and not to be forgotten
' is the White Deer Rodeo which
is known through out the Pan-
handle area as one of the best
amateur rodeos in the Tri-
State Area.
Highlights of the three day
event will be the free barbecue
Thursday afternoon, 5 :00 p. m.
on July 27. Rodeo ticket hold-
ers for the opening evening
of the rodeo on Thursday night
[will be admitted free to the
vbarbecue which will be served
tin the south east portion of
ithe rodeo grounds. After the
feed the White Deer Stampeders
Square Dance Club will be
putting on a free exhibition
before the rodeo starts at 8 p. m.
Cooking of the beef in the
four deep pits will begin on
Wednesday, July 26 when
mesquite wood which has been
gathered by local men will
sbegin to burn to make coals
on which the large cuts of beef
.•will be wrapped in burlap and
buried on the hot coals. The
iw'hite Deer Lions Club will be
in charge of all the trimmings.
Letters Of Protest Filed
In Behalf Of RR System
Applications of the Atchison,
Topeka and Santa Fe Railway
Company for authority to dis-
continue its agency station at
White Deer and to handle such
work at Panhandle, Texas
Agency has been filed with the
Railroad Commission of Texas,
Transportation Division, Austin,
Texas.
The City of White Deer along for work, but wishing she was
with major shippers locally and
other interested parties have
filed letters of protest with John serious thought going through

Preliminary Budget
Hearing Set With
Industrial Taxpayers
White Deer Independent
School District officials will
hold a preliminary budget
meeting with representatives
of industrial taxpayers on
Thursday evening at 7:00 P. M.
for a dinner meeting, being
prepared by the White Deer
cafeteria staff. The Board
of Education will hold a pre-
liminary meeting with the
staff of Pritchard and Abbott
of Amarillo, valuation en-
gineers for the school district
at 6:00 P. M. Following the
meal at 7:00 P. M. the meet-
ing will continue with tax
representatives, the Board of
Education and the Board of
Equalization. The group
will go over the entire proposed
budget for WDISD for 1978-79.
The budget will be finalized
and a tax rate adopted at a
later date, by the Board of
Education.
By action of the legislature
in session last year, WDISD
has become eligible for
some state funds. This en-
ables the Board of Education
to continue a redaction in
local school taxes. In 1977
the board adopted a rate re-
duction of $1. 37 per hundred
valuation from the rate of
$L 46 used in 1976. The
present board will study the
possible reduction of taxes
to a rate of $L 27 for 1978,
based upon the same property
ownership.
The members of the Board
of Equalization will be in
session on Friday morning,
July 7, 1978 from 9:00 A. M.
to 12:00 noon to hear any
complaint on property val-
uations by local and indust-
rial taxpayers. Members
of the Board of Equalization
are Dare Locke, Chairman,
John Kotara Jr. and Paul
Hinton, with Markham D.

On Monday, July 10
The council for the City of
White Deer will meet for the
regular session this month on
Monday JulylO, 7:30 p.m. at
City Hall. Auditor Wayne
Brown will present the audit
for the city's fiscal, ye ar'which
ended March 31.

public phones, roofing Fire
Station, discussion of building
codes, approval of accounts
payable and law enforcement.
Bids on sale and removal of
the old Community Center will

Thomas Dominic Anderwald,
• 68, who died at 5:00 p. m.

Hospital in Pampa. Mass was

: Rev. Francis J. Hynes, C. M.
officiating. The Rev. Stan
j Cosby of the First Methodist

sisted. Burial was in the
Sacred Heart Cemetery', White
.Deer under the direction of
' Carmichael-Whatley Funeral
Directors.
I Mr. Anderwald was born
•44 arch 6, 1910, in Bandera,
Texas. He had been a resi-
dent of White Deer since 1927,
and farmed in Carson and Gray
(counties since coming to the
I Panhandle. He was a member
of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
Church in Pampa.
He was married to Eleanor
Haiduk in 1935, she preceeded
him in death in 1964. He was
married to Fem Jackson in
May of 1970.
I He is survived by his wife;
one son, Robert Anderwald of
Pampa; one daughter, Mrs.
Carolyn Rapstine of Panhandle;
one step-daughter, Mrs. Sam
/Phillips of Breckenridge; one
step-son, Kenneth Jackson of
Groom; two brothers, Ted and
Sylvester both of Sacramento,
California; three sisters, Mrs.
Frances Doyle of San Antonio,
Mrs. Maggie Dobkins of Spring,
' Mrs. Mary Mixon of Texarkana;
.and eight grandchildren. He
' was preceeded in death by a
brother, Matt Anderwald in
.968.
