Last-minute mail races the clock
By JEFF RIGGS
The Baytown Sun
A Baytown post office super-
visor said that postal patrons
mailing by regular first class,
who expect packages to get
where they are going by Christ-
mas probably aren’t going to
make it.
Beverly Bielamowicz said time
is tod short. However, someone
wanting to pay $10.75 can mail
by Express Mail. That price is
for the first 8 ounces, with a
price of $ 15 for up to 2 pounds.
“The guarantee for Express
Mail is generally one day,” she
said. “There are some remote
locations without a local post
office which may take a little
longer, but these are few.”
A customer may also go the
route of Priority Mail, with a
mailing up to two pounds for $3.
This is no guarantee, but expec-
tations are that a customer can
get their mailing to its destina-
tion in 2 to 3 days.
She said there was more postal
traffic last Monday than any
other day, but volume prior to
Christmas has been very heavy.
“We have had thousands and
thousands of packages and cards
go through here,” Bielamowicz
said. “There is much higher vol-
ume during this time.”
She said this is perhaps the
busiest year ever.
“The reason it is busier this
year is that the Texas Avenue
contract station has closed, and
the contract station at Gray Phar-
macy no longer has postal
boxes,” she said. “When they,
come in here to check their:
postal boxes, they take advan-
tage of the postal windows here.”
A contract station is a business
which may or may not be related
to the postal activity, which con-
ducts limited postal services.
She said another reason for
more postal traffic this year than
in the past is the growth of the
area.
“We have had a growth spurt,”
she said. “This is especially true
with expansion in Chambers
County.”
She said the Baytown post
office is serving the public well,
even under the greater load. ;
“We are keeping all five win-
dows (in the lobby) open, with
relief people coming in during
the lunch hour,” she said.
“This is one of the best groups
of postal employees I have ever
worked with, and I have worked
at several locations.”
She said expanded postal hours
have helped in the success of han-
dling the additional postal traffic.
“We are usually open from 9 to
12 on Saturday,” she said.
“For the last two weeks, our
Postmaster Wiley Davis, has
chosen to have the hours
expanded from 9 to 3. Sunday
hours for the past two weekends
have been 11 to 3. These have
helped a lot.”

lips for mailing Cl
When attempting to mail
Christmas gifts fast and efficient-
ly, mailing correctly is indispens-
able. Here are some methods to
achieve these ends when mailing
multiple Christmas gifts in the
same box. Source: Baytown Post
Office.
• When mailing several gifts in
a cardboard box, choose a plain
box with no markings. If the box
has writing on it, wrap the box in
brown paper. Do not attempt to
mail objects in gift wrap.
• Print or label with return
address on upper left-hand comer
of area addressed. Print name and
address in center of address area.
Return address is very important
• Label with address on one
side of box only.
Duane Dillon of Pack & Mail,
iristmas packages
a local mailing company, said the
three main options for mailing are
as follows with mandates:
• U.S. Mail: no more than 70
pounds, and 108 inches girth.
Girth is distance around the box.
• United Postal Service (UPS):
150 pounds, and 150 inches girth.
• Federal Express: 150 pounds,
and 165 inches girth.
Additionally:
• Firearms should not be
mailed. Firearms dealers are the
only agencies licensed to mail
firearms.
• Alcoholic beverages should
not be mailed. Only licensed
liquor stores can mail items clas-
sified, as alcoholic beverages,
including fancy basket arrange-
ments with beer and cheese.
