Railroad association to hold
meeting in Kingsland April 1
y.
By Judy Miller ,
The Hill Country Railroad
Association will hold its next
meeting April 1, at 7 p.m. at the
Antlers Hotel in Kingsland.
Joe Ramirez of Capital Metro
will be a guest speaker. We also
hope to have present Donald
Cheatham, the director of Central of
Tennessee Railroad. The Austin
City Council selected Central of
Tennessee as the rail freight carrier
on the Llano to Giddings rail line.
Cheatham has voiced his support of
the efforts of the HCRA to renovate
this line.
The goal of the HCRA to
renovate the track between
Kingsland and Llano is under full
steam. Most people associate the
HCRA with no more than a tour
train. This is really our secondary
goal. Our first goal is to promote
freight service for the economic
enhancement of Llano County.
' Rail freight is becoming more
attractive to shippers as road
maintenance, insurance, wages,
etc., are driving trucking costs up.
Rail is the safest and most
economical method of moving
heavy freight. Granite is a leading
export from Llano County and we
need to promote our granite
industry, along with using the rails
for transporting feed, fuel, and other
commodities.
To have rail service return to
Llano County, we must bring the
track up to at least a Class Two
track. The Federal Interstate
2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk
is Saturday at Fall Creek
Fall Creek Vineyards will host
the Second Annual 5K Run/Walk
Through the Wildflowers and Arts
of the Heart Festival on Saturday
March 30, at 10 a.m., at Fall Creek
Vineyards in Llano County.
The vineyard and race site is
located 2.2 miles northwest of
Tow, on the shores of beautiful
Lake Buchanan. First place fin-
ishers in both the male and female
division of The Run will receive
one round trip ticket to anywhere
Southwest Airlines flies in the
continental United States.
Registration will be accepted right
up until race day.
Proceeds from the run will
benefit The Friends of the Colorado
River Foundation.
An annual LCRA RiverFest
event, this year's run had been
expanded to include the " Arts of the
Heart Festival," a celebration of all
the arts, recreational, culinary,
historical, performing, visual and
viticultural arts.
Correction
In last week's advertisement for
the Woman’s Culture Club trip for
April 8, the telephone number was
incorrect.
It should have read, 247-5809.
This event promises to be a fun
filled day of wildflowers, festivities
and fun with whole family.
Transportation Enhancement Act^
ISTEA, is tailored to our needs to
provide the much needed funds for
this project. Although our first two
attempts to receive this nomination
failed, we feel that we will be
successful on the third applicatiort,
mainly because it is to be pin-
pointed toward transportation.
With much work from Marthd
Long, our application for historical
designation is eligible for listing in
the National Register of Historio
Places. The rail line is associated
with events that have made a
significant contribution to the board
patterns of our history, and
embodies distinctive characteristics
of a type, period, and method of
construction. With this listing of
eligibility, the HCRA has fulfilled
a crucial requirement to quality for
consideration of ISTEA funds. The
nomination form will be filed with
the Texas Department of Transpor-
tation on May 1, 1996.
We strongly urge anyone
interested in this exciting develop-
ment in the future of the railroad in
Llano County to attend this most
important meeting.
