Six Weimar players were
named on the 21-man mythical
All-Tournament team at Hous-
ton the past week. Al Winters
of Weimar was one of the
catchers named on the "big”
team. Pitchers included Jiggs
Kana and Murray Wall of Wei-
mar, Charley Gorin of Conroe
(another ex-Lavacan), Red Big-
I gers of Baytown, Bobby
Schroeder of Shell, Leonard
Burton of Center (another La-
vacan pitcher this season), and
Frankie Womack of Angelo’s
Cafe, arid who pitched one
game for Hallettsville against
Weimar this season.
Frankie Kana of Weimar was
named the team’s third base-
man while George Billeck was
made the team’s center fielder.

Home On Leave
Jerome Tupa, S-A, stationed
with the U. S. Navy in San Die-
go, Calif., spent a 12-day leave
at home. He came in on Sept.

day night, Sept. 10. Local boys
whom he met at his training
center are “Binky” Bozka, Dan-
iel Boethel, Ronnie Schulte. He
saw Billy Devall in a parade
but did not have a qjiance to
talk to him. Upon returning to
his (base Jerome will be sent to
a school of special training to
become a Fire Controllman. U-
pon the completion of this
course he will go to sea, in a-
bout 13 weeks.
Jerome is a graduate of Hal-
lettsville High School, class of
1948. He is 18 years old and is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton

LAVACA COUNTY
Hallettsville can almost share
the honors with Weimar that
the Herder Truckers of that ci-
ty earned in the Houston Post
Tournament? Several of the
Truckers are former players of
the Hallettsville Lavacan base-
ball team. Weimar won the sec-
ond place consolation- prize in
the tourney with a splendid re-
cord.
George Billeck, “Jiggs” Ka-
na, and Frank Kana. played
this year with Hallettsville ear-
ly in the season. Last year
“Jiggs” and Billeck placed with
Hallettsville when we won the
GVL championship.
The Herder Truckers got
$1525 as their slice of the $6100
Houston Post Tournament
prize money. This represents
25 per cent of the net profits
from the tourney. That winning
run of the second game Mon-
day night cost the Truckers
$915, for first place winners
Conroe received 40 per cent ;of
the pot .amounting to $2440.
A $100 bond went to George
Billeck, speedy centerfielder of
the Truckers, for being the best
hitter in the Houston Post
Tournament.' Billeck was up 32
times and got 13 hits, for an
average of .406. Billeck, besides
being a steadily good hitter,
raised quite a few eyebrows,
as the Weimar Mercury puts
it, with his fast base-running
during the tourney. After sports
writers had watched him sev-
eral times, one of them brought
a stop watch to one of Wei-
mar’s games and began timing 1
> him. Billeck laid down a neat
ing buddy thinks it’s going to be a
wonderful place. They’re well-
dressed scholars in outfits by John-
ston in cotton Zepheroy overalls,

Cleveland, Ohio, ^ept. 10. —
A “magic fluid” that gives an
automobile engine an added
oomph for quick getaways or
help over a steep hill was in-
troduced here yesterday.
It is a solution containing al-
cohol, water, tetraethyl lead
and a soluble oil. The technique
was used to boost power of A-
merican warplanes and is now
employed on commercial
liners to help takeoffs.
