Lions Club Update
Pictured above are, from left, Lion Keith Morris, paramedic/fireman Jeff
Ruppert, Yoakum Fire Chief David Ferry and Lion Bill Mittikin
Lion President Layne Brandt began the July 24 meeting by reminding
members of Yoakum's upcoming 108th birthday.
After several business announcements, he turned the meeting over to
Lions Bill Millikin and Keith Morris. Lion Millikin introduced the speak-
ers for the day, Yoakum Fire Chief David Ferry and fireman Jeff Ruppert.
Ruppert, also a paramedic, reported on the fire department's funding pro-
gram. He said that most monies needed to buy equipment for the depart-
ment were obtained through fund-raisers performed by the Yoakum Fire
Departments's 20 non-salaried individuals and its nine paid personnel.

Continuing m a senes of educational messages on women
and their medical concerns:
Facing Multiplicity
It may be of interest to those couples considering fertility treat-
ment' that they are so successful that the number of births in this
country is rising In fact, the success rate is so high that the infertil-
ity industry has implemented guidelines that change the typical in-
v itro practice of implanting as many as 6 embryos to help ensure
the chances of getting one of them to survive and deliver The prob-
lem arts' ..a er the tact that pregnancies involving multiple em-
bryos arc more likely to lead to very premature delivery, very
k vv birth weights. and congenital defects With this in mind, the
American Society tor reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has recom-
mended >imnmg implants to three or four embryos in the belief that
placing (Ins limitation vv ill increase the odds of having singleton, or
possible tw m pregnancy, and a higher take-home-baby rate
1 he really good news is that for many couples, who would, just
a tew ve.irs ago have been considered hopelessly infertile, now are
able 10 have babies 1 here are now numerous options - not all of
them appropriate tor all patients - in infertility treatments. If you
hav e been liav mg trouble conceiving, don't let the news stories about
multiple buths detei you from seeking help I offer basic and inter-
mediate level infertility services, such that consultation and basic
testing should clarify the type of treatment, if any. that is indicated
