Nearly 40 of the top checkers
players in Texas, Arkansas and
Louisiana are scheduled to be in
Cleveland Jan. 30 and 31, to take
part in the 35th Annual South Texas
Open Checker Tournament.
This year’s event is sponsored
by Cleveland Bank & Trust, First
Bank & Trust, Trinity Valley Sav-
ings and Loan, Mayor Ronnie Mc-
Waters, and G. C. Bailey, Cleve-
land’s veteran checker player
known throughout this country for
his championship play over several
decades.
The tournament will be held at
Cleveland’s Charles O. Austin Me-
morial Library and cash prizes will
be awarded. Starting time will be at
noon on both days.
Four rounds will be played
Saturday and three rounds on Sun-

masters and minors division, a
juniors division will be held for
those 18 years old and younger.
According to Bailey, first
place cash prize could be about 3100
for the major and minor divisions,
and a trophy will be awarded to the
juniors champion. There will also
be prizes for second and third place.
During the * scheduled seven
rounds, two points will be awarded
for a win, and one for a draw.
There will be an entry fee of
$7.50 and contestants are urged to
bring their their checker boards
and lucky checkers
Coffee, donuts, and cookies
will be served during the two-day
event, and everyone is welcomed to
come either as a contestant or spec-
tator

budget for 1982. CISD’s share of the budget will be,
$72,962, up from $66,500 in 1981. This exceeds the
amount CISD had budgeted for the CAD by $1,900,
but school officials see no problem.in paying the

ROOF REPORT
School Superintendent Charles Barker re-
ported that the junior high annex roof will soon be
in need of repair. The roof has had a small leak all
year, but the recent winter storms have damaged
it further. A large part of the ceiling in two rooms
and the entry hall will have to be replaced. Barker
said that he may ask the board for action on this
roof in February.
Bids were opened on redoing the high school
roof, covering the existing roof with a eurethane
coating. Nine bida from eight companies were
opened. A special committee made up of Superin-
tendent Barker, Dr. Stan Jones, Bubba Toler,
. Jerry Alexander, Bob Steely, and Eugene Camp-
bell met Wednesday night to review the bids. At
press time Thursday no final decision had been
made.
