A LETTER OF THANKS.
Through the ^columns of the
Banner-Leader I wish to thank
the many friends for their as-
sistance in helping me to win the
$10.00 gold piece. I am certainly
proud of it. I feel encouraged by
the good showing I have made
since the last count.
Any assistance from my friends
either by the merchant votes or
subscription will be greatly ap-
preciated.
While I have had a pretty hard
task, I feel encouraged. The
first two weeks after I was nomi-
nated I was sick and was not
able to work any, but didn’t give
up and say, “I can’t” “Ican’t”
died long time ago and ‘‘I’ll try”
buried it. So I am going to
keep on trying.
I will finish chopping cotton
in a few days, and then I will
have more time to work in the
contest.
Yours truly,
Joe Davis.

The graduating exercises of the
Ballinger High School, Friday
night, was one of the most brilli-
ant in the history of this excel-
lent school. The opera house
was filled with an appreciative au-
dience. The stage was made into
a picture de resistance, being
handsoemly dcorated in the class
colors, green and white, the stage
was draped in white with festoons
of English Wy. Massive palms
formed the background and
magnificient cape jessamines
drooped and clustered about,
freighting the air with their sweet
perfume.
The scene typified spring, the
hallowed time of maidenhood and
young manhood. All nature
seemed jubilent over the triumphs
won by the graduates,fl awaiting
their diplomas and the last seal
of distinction and favor from
their beloved school, which has
opened and paved the way for
them to mount the steps of higher
education.
The program opened with
an impressive invocation by Rev.
J. A. Biggs, followed with music
by the High School Band. The
orations by the yotmg men gradu-
ates, Messrs Otice Brown and
Leihmie * Davis, and the essays
by the sweet girl graduates Misses
Mary Godwin and Leona Miller,
were beautifuly rendered, and
were the masterpieces of youth-
ful minds, each receiving gener-
ous applause.
The chorous by the High School
was an appreciative feature of the
program, and the Baccalaureate
address by Dr. R. H. Hamilton,
of Brownwood, was very interest-
ing and replete with thoughtful
advice.
Prof. Bird, the scholarly super-
intendent of the colege, made a
few well chosen remaks of appre-
ciation of the marked courtesies
shown him by the faculty and
patrons and giving a synopsis
of the past years woJc, which has
been most creditable in every
department, much to the gratifi-
cation of our entire city.
R. W. Bruce, president of the
board of trustees, presented the
diplomas and conferred the hon-
ors Miss May Godwin and Mr.
Limmie Davis winning the scholar-
ship to the University.
The graduates were fairly show-
ered with boquets, baskets of
flowers and other floral designs,
the gifts of friends.
The benediction was pronoun-
ced by Rev. II. M. Bandy.

PUPILS RECITAL.
Becht
A very interesting recital was
given Saturday aft re noon by the
pfapils of Mrs. Peyton Orgain, at
her home on eighth street.
There was present a large as-
sembly of patrons and admirers
of this successful teacher, to hear
the rendition of the programme,
which, though neccessarily long,
owing to her large class, was
listened from beginning to end
with evident pleasure and satis-
faction.
Mrs. Orgain is possessed of that
rare faculty of getting the very

inspiring zeal and ambition that is
essential to the progress of pu-
pils.
