Longhorns strike early
lead to beat Texans
By JACK PICKREN
Unlike last year
local Halloween
activities limited
The J. Frank Doble Long-
horns dominated first half play
and then were dominated In
the second half by the Sam
Rayburn Texans. Each team
scored two touchdowns during
their respective dominant pe-
riods, but Doble used the sure
foot of Ricky Thomas to put
two extra points on the score-
board. The Texans went for
two points after both of their
touchdowns and were twice
repelled.
Doble played for 24 minutes
as if the game were a routine
step in their quest for the
District championship. The fi-
nal 24 minutes were quite
different as the Homs ended
fighting to hold their slender
lead In the game and the
District. Steve Snyder did a
good job carrying the ball for
Doble, but the Texans adjusted
to his Inside slashes In the
second half. It was obvious that
the outside threat of the injur-
ed Edward O’Brien was miss-
ed. There was good news for
the Horns as O'Brien did play
some in the second period.
With Walter Trojanowsky
directing the Homs, they
started the game at their own
20 but could not move the ball.
Jeff Jacobson punted to the
Texan 43, and Doble success-
fully unveiled a specialty punt-
ing team on the play. A hard
hitting tackle caused a Texan
fumble which was covered by
Jeff Ehrlich and Doble was in
business again.
The Homs wasted little time
in scoring with Snyder taking
it In from less than one yard
away. The ball was placed
inside the one on a sixteen
yard pass from Trojanowsky
to Pat Villareal. Snyder ac-
counted for 24 yards On 3
carries prior to the pass.
The Doble kick coverage
team once again proved tough.
Jeff Ehrlich came down fast
and downed Mark Blanchard
as he took the kick-off at his
own 20. With the help of a
penalty the Texans made one
first down but were halted at
their 32 by the hard hitting of
Steve Sheffield and Jim Tay-
urday, October 30, for all who
would like to come; not re-
stricted for church member-
ship.
The purpose of the party is
to give the local children a
place to enjoy Halloween,
rather than on the streets.
Foods, booths, and a ’’dunk
the Christian” game will all
be featured. Those coming,
including adults are encour-
aged to dress in costume.
The fun starts at 6:30 In the
activity building , located be-
hind the church.
Sagemont Presbyterian
Church is sponsoring a party
Sunday for 4th and 5th graders
complete with a hot dog supper
and trick or treating a mem-
ber’s houses.
As opposed to last year’s
numerous South Be It area
planned Halloween activities,
this year, theStuchbery carni-
val appears to be the only
major activity planned for
local youngsters.
The carnival which will be
held on Saturday from 1-6 p.m.
has the theme, Festival In
Fantasyland. It will include 32
booths, located both inside and
outside the school building.
Since some Burnett Ele-
mentary students are present-
ly housed in the Stuchbery
school, the carnival is being
held jointly, with a portion of
the profits going to Burnett’s
newly formed PTA.
Park Place Methodist will
hold a Halloween party on Sat-
Dobie had to start at their own
32 where the kick rolled dead.
The Texans held and Jacobson
got a good 36 yard punt, Into a
20 m.p.h. wind, and the ball
was placed on the Rayburn
22.
This time Dave Taylor, Ce-
dric Battle and David Koetter
led tn stopping the Texans.
Raybum kicked 55 yards and
Doble started at their own 29.
A 19 yardTrojanowsky pass to
Brad Stewart, a 15 yard pass
from Trojanowsky to Charles
Bell and the running of Steve
Snyder moved the Homs to the
Texan 13 as the first quarter
ended.
On the sixth play of the
second quarter, Charles Clark
carried the ball Into the end
zone from inside the two yard
line. Thomas added his second
extra point. With 10:10 re-
maining in the first half the
Homs had a 14-0 lead.
Neither team could move the
ball during the remaining ten
minutes of the first half.- Jim
Taylor, Dave Taylor, Keith
Kveton, David Nylund, and
David Koetter put pressure on
the Texas passing game to
halt Raybum for the remaind-
er of the second period.
While both bands and drill
teams were giving an enter-
taining halftime show, some
thing was happening In the
locker rooms. Rayburn came
back fired up while Doble had
trouble breaking in the pep
clubs paper banner running
back on the field.
Sam Raybum returned the
kick-off 17 yards to the 32.
Behind the passing of Steve
Runnels the Texans moved 68
yards for their first score. A
Runnels attempted pass for
two points was Incomplete.
The drive featured a 22 yard
pass to running back Randy
Grounds and two 11 yard pass-
es to runningback Gary Mech-
ler. The last was good for the
touchdown.
On their next possession
Doble was stopped at their own
33. Jacobson punted for 67
yards into the end zone. The
ball narrowly missed going
out of bounds at the one.
Raybum moved to the Doble
low. curry o*»viww wtMn»t M where Sayder, who played
blocked the Rayburn puwt, but well on offense and defense,

May Lou's Florist
stopped Grounds short of a
first down. Dobie was halted
again and Jacobson kicked to
the Texan 15. Larry Ehrlich
stopped the return at the 29
just as it appeared the ball
carrier was in the open and
headed for a long gain.
Tim Eastland and Ricky
Scott made some good stops in
the secondary to halt the Tex-
ans at their own 49. A delay
of game moved the ball to the
44. Rick Kinsey punted for 53
yards with the ball rolling to
the three yard line. Dobie
again could not move the in-
spired Texan defense and Ja-
cobson punted to the Rayburn
41. It was a 46 yard punt
against the wind.
Raybum quickly moved to
score on five plays. A 33 yard
pass from Runnels to Tolly
Acuff put the Texans on the
board again. Chris Connealy
made a good tackle to stop the
two point attempt and Doble
had the win.
The Longhorns made one
first down on their next series
as EdwardO'Brien entered the
game and carried for three
yards. They played for 18
minutes In the second half
without a first down. Dobie
was forced to punt once more
and Raybum took over at their
own 28.
The Homs held as Eastland
knocked down a Runnels pass.
The Texans punted and Doble
got the ball at their own 31.
This time the Homs, on the
running of Trojanowsky and
Snyder, got two first downs.
A tense moment was avoided
when, with less than one min-
ute remaining and Doble need-
ing two yards to keep the ball,
Raybum was offside. The
Homs got the first down and
killed the remaining time.
Bright spots for Doble were
that all players appear to be
healthy for the next game and
coach Sam Sailer is using most
of his squad even close games.
Jacobson's punting has im-
proved' to the point where it
was outstanding in this con-
test. Pass defense in the sec-
ondary and lack of pressure
in the defensive line were
costly. This was an early
season problem which appear-
ed to be solved, A major
concern Is that the usually
hard charging offensive line
had trouble blocking. Credit
should go to an Inspired Ray-
burn team, but Dobie did ap-
pear to be down after their
good performance against La
Porte. After this "off'period
look for the Longhorns to
bounce back at Deer Park next
Friday.
