Dr. Sommerfeldt welcomes ,
the challenge that his new

that the University of Dallas
is a unique community and he
understands his responsi-

a society which encourages

nameless and 'just get by',
the University of Dallas dares
to challenge itself to produce

Over $1,000 worth of fur-
niture and office equipment
have disappeared over the
past six months from the UD
campus. A sofa, three large
tapestries, and several
lamps, chairs, paintings, and
potted plants vanished from
the Haggar Center within the
first week of the new semes-
ter and an electric typewriter
was taken from Carpenter
Hall.
The worst part about these
burglaries, besides the high

price, is the wide range of
suspects. The thefts could
have happened almost any
time of the day or night and
could have been committed
by almost anyone, student or
non-student, on campus or
off. The Irving police have
been notified about the stolen
items, but it is improbable
that they will turn anything
up. An insurance claim has
been filed on the missing
furniture, to cover some of
the costs of the merchandise,
but the University is nat-
urally reluctant to replace
many of the more valuable
pieces.
To prevent such major
thefts from occuring again,
furniture and other items in
the student lounges will be
marked for identification.
Security in and around the
Haggar Center will also be
increased at night, all but one
of the entrances to the Center
will be locked and the office
facilities upstairs will be
closed to students. The secur-
ity desk downstairs will be
manned continuously and
guards will patrol the area
regularly. It is hoped that
such action will be enough to
decrease the theft of such
large and expensive pieces of
furniture, if it does not stop
the burglaries all together.
