Scribe Dale Austin of Electra Boy
Scouts, Flaming Arrow troops 1 and
2, reports upon the recent (rip of a
group of his fellows to attend the
Wichita Falls Lions Club parade and
benefit performance, given by youth-
ful stars in that cii.y, Saturday af-
ternoon and evening, February 5.
“We left Electra r«t noon, Satur-.
day,” recounts the scribe. “Arriving
there about one-thirty wo assembled,
at the Scout headquarters in Wich-
ita Falls, where we were d cessed in
our Indian costumes find were paint-
ed for,the Scalp Dance—our number
in the parade and performance. At
four-thirty the parade was nvei and
we attended a dinner at the Holt
Hotel where we were the guests of
the Lions Club. At half past seven
we again assembled and prepared to
put on the dance at the Palace The-
atre. Scout William Stafford made
fire by friction at the beginning of
the dance. The audience was most
generous with applause all through
the evening and the Electra scouts
received their full share during their
number.”
While Scribe Austin’s story excels
in modesty and brevity, it is per-
haps only fair to quote, also, an
account clipped from a Wichita
exchange, throwing an illuminating
side light on the event:
“It remained for Electra to send
down one of the most colorful spec-
tacles of the program. Boy Scouts of
that city—more than a score of
them—gave an Indian dance that was
a sensation. First, a primitive brave
drew fire on the stage with his
bow and spindle; then came the fan-
tastic steps, the eerie cries and the
solemn beat of the tom toms. Gor-
geous raiment, and effective
mg combined to . make the
one well worth seeing.”
Describing the parade the
runs:
“The marchers began gathering
at the courthouse square soon
after 1 o’clock and by 2:45 every-
thing was in readiness. The start
was made fron Travis and Seventh,
the line of march extending can
on Seventh to Scott, south cn
o Tenth, east on Tenth to Ohio,
north on Ohio to Seventh, west on
Seventh to Indiana, south t6 Tenth,
west to Lamar and back to the
courthouse.
Heading it all was the inevitable
corp$( of motor cops dealing the
way Tlie police department’s uni-
formed firemen, Police and Fixe
Commissioner Quiesser and Chief?
George Hodgins and J. L. McClure,
respective heads of the police and
fire departments, rode regally, in an
open car with their brass buttons
gleaming. Behind them were the
Lions club boys band, with their
brand new uniforms of grey trimmed
with gold and black.
It was the band’s first
in their new outfits.
A live Lion borrowed from the
Wortham Shows, followed by several
members of the Lions club on foot
