Life with the paper
By David "Scoop” Johnson
so I strolled on do-
wn to the drug store. Things were a lit-
tle slow. Most of the good ole boys were
off working and Eugene was gone to a Ph-
armacy Convention.
Things began to pick up late that nig-
ht though when Jeannies parents (John
and Martha) dropped in to see us at 4:00
a.m. in the morning. I didn’t even real-
ize there was a 4 a.m. in the morning
until I found myself sitting there havi-
ng a cup of coffee with Jeannies mom and
dad.
I was enjoying it until Jeannie’s Dad
ask me how the goats were doing. That
was a little much. I went back to bed.
Later on in the week Annie 0’ told me
she wanted to get a couple of chickens.
Chickens! Chickens?
"How about some rabbits," I said.
Jeannie said, "Rabbits! Rabbits?"
I don’t know. I guess we’ll get some
chickens.
Things are really rolling here in Leo-
nard. It looks like we might get a new
railroad spur, it rained, the stock tan-
ks are full, and people were tracking
mud around again.
I dropped into the Graphic the other
day to see how things were going and Je-
annie got after me for tracking mud on
to the new rug, Patsy got mad because I
said the new clock was a few minutes fa-
st and Marilyn'got upset because I inte-
rrupted her typing.
I can take a hint

Millie parented twins, while living here.
GLORIA (MRS. JAMES) LAFAVERS, still has
shaky knees, about driving, especially on
farm roads. She and her family and hosts
of friends rejoice that she came out of
what could have been a fatal accident, wi-
thout injury. She was driving west on the
Lane Road in the early morning half light,
recently. A herd of ten horses that had
broken out of a near by pasture, was dire-
ctly in her path as she watched warning
lights from an on coming car. Bam! All she
saw was a black wall hitting her windshie-
ld. She routed the weaving car to a stand-
still, turned off the motor, unbuckled her
seat belt and got out. Two horses were de-
ad. Later one, reportedly, was found with
two broken legs.
Gloria was enroute to nurses training
class in Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas.
She regained her courage and is attending
the four day weekly sessions, a long 2^
years course for a courageous young lady.
Her car is totaled. She uses relatives
cars for the daily trips.
DAVID, A TYPICAL COLUMNIST you are, to
make a short story long like the cake epi-
sode in last weekls paper.
One would think I'd slaved all one hot
morning and stacked a five layer iced ca-
ke. The fact of the matter I'll admit. My
family and friends know I don't bake. We-
ll, maybe an apple pie or so when my app-
les were in season. But your cake was the
excess from a strawberry sheath cake made
for the Bingo Club last week. The small
excess was to keep the middle (of the ca-
ke) from being too thick. But glad you li-
ked it.
Playing Bingo were Comer, Marie, Owana,
Ida, Angielou, Tommie Jo, Gladys, June and
Lorene W.
GLAD TO HAVE GLADYS Lewis back home wal-
ling with a walker.
THIS IS A GOOD, COOLISH, RAINY MONDAY
AFTERNOON. It is good for watching a base-
ball game, quite a rare thing for Monday
p.m. The colorful Houston Astros and L.A.
Dodgers, are in a neck and neck race to
see who goes into the playoffs. Will pull
for the Astros. Heard a local sports fan,
former coach and good friend say, he hoped
to see a world series game and that would
be if the Houston team goes the route tod-
ay and the play off with the National East
Division.
ABOUT ALL I KNOW, I SEE in the papers as
Will Rogers would say. "Luna Renominated"
was a small item in Sundays Dallas News,
the item brought to my attention by, Haro-
ld Armstrong.
The item read, "President Carter has re-
nominated Charles Luna of Dallas to the
board of directors of Amtrack, the Nation-
al Railroad Passenger Corporation, for a
* term expiring in 1984."
The report continues, "Luna, 73, has be-
en a member of the board since 1970. He is
president emeritus of the United Transpor-
tation Union and began work as a switchman
in Dallas in 1928."
Now it doesn't make new news that Charl-
es is renominated, and by President Cart-
er, but it is sort of a shock to see 73.
(I think that's wrong.) Has been such a
few years since he was a sixth or seventh
grader 1921-22 and would "get" his spelli-
ng lesson to his mother's satisfaction be-
fore going out to play.
Congratulation Charles and you too, Op-
* al!
IN THE TEXAS METHODIST, Gary Kincaid pa-
stor of Irving, North Gate Church is pict-
ured as he physically helps in the buildi-
ng of a new church. Piers are drilled as
the church replaces their practically new
sanctuary that had to be razed. Churches
in the North Texas Conference, help in the
project, at least to get it going. Gary
was pastor here, four years ago. He and
