This Friday, May 18th will mark
the third anniversary from the first
day this writer sat down at this
typewriter and pounded out the
first feeble lines of “Hometown”.
It doesn’t seem like 1,095 days
have passed since we first retur-
ned to Electra, but here we are 155
columns later still pounding out a
few feeble lines for “Hometown.”
I couldn’t keep from chuckling
the other day as I read Glen
Shelton’s column on the “Miracle
of Terrible Tuesday” and his
comments on the fact that birds
seemed to escape prior to the
storm which devastated Wichita
Falls. His writings brought to
mind some things about birds that
the movies would have us believe.
You’ve probably seen it before,
but I recall in all of the “Tarzan”
movies how the “Ape Man knew
there were villians near whenallof
the birds in the jungle quit
chirping. I never could figure out
how he convinced the birds to keep
on singing when he would sneak
up on the bad guys. It was the
same way in the. Westerns. The
injunswould creep, up on camp site;
and right away the birds, as
though they sensed the inevitable,
would clam up quicker than Nixon
on Watergate and Kennedy on
Chappaquiddick.
There may be something to this
seventh sense, however, since any
parent can tell you that when the
kids get quiet you know something
amuck.
Of course the movies and
television would have us believe a
lot of things, but they aren’t too
consistent with their fantasies.
Take Superman for instance.
Remember how the. bullets ,
would bounce off his chest? Then,
ole “More Powerful than a
Locomotive” would dodge -the
pistol thrown at him. Definetely
inconsistent with his image. (Tliis
is not an original thought, but one
stolen from-David Brenner off of
the Tonight Show last night)
Brenner also wonders how Super-

given community.
Unveiling of the aircraft will
begin at 3:10 p.m. near Building
1010. It will be preceded with a
welcoming address by Major
General Charles T. Donnelly Jr.,
center commander, and a center
mission briefing.
Dedication ceremonies are
scheduled to conclude with per-
formances by the Sheppard Drum
and Bugle Corps and Drill Team
