Sir Walt and I watched the Y.2K
scenario with a great deal of
interest and avarice. We didn't even
begrudge the computer witch
doctors who grew wealthy doing
incantations over the computers of
the world to stave off threatening
maladies and possible death. We
had a sure fire, no fail scheme to
amass some cash out of the deal for
ourselves that was semi-honest and
not too risky.
We had a theory that the’ ATM
machines in our city would most
likely go berserk and erupt green <
backs at the stroke of midnight on
12-31 -99 and we made elaborate
plans to harvest a goodly supply of
them.
Our plan called for camouflage
uniforms, butterfly nets and tow
sacks with draw strings. We got the
spotted britches and shirts from
Army Surplus, the butterfly nets
from Golden Butterfly and the tow
sacks came from Dicky D's Pecan
House. We did not arouse any
suspicion as we got our supplies
together.
Our plan was simple — we
would mosey to the proximity of
those ATM's and snag the bills as
they spewed out. We laid our plans
carefully and synchronized our
watches at the 7 a m. Naughts of
the Brown Table Assembly on
December 31, 1999. Thence we
retreated to our respective domi-
ciles and awaited the witching hour.
Sir Walt was a union welder
back when , and my years of
experience with the Light Company
put us in good stead to pull the
caper of the century without doing
anything extremely dishonest.
Unfortunately, Sir Walt ate a
sumptuous supper and dozed off
long before time for the money
shower. Ol' Margaret saw me in my
uniform and with my butterfly net
and tow sack and she made such
sport of my appearance I was
overcome with pique and suited up
like an old possum. Neither of us
showed up.
Sir Eddie was at the Round
Brown Table and as is his penchant
he rode us pretty hard about our
dereliction of duty.
"Neither one of you will ever
amount to a hill of beans!" was the
way Sir Eddie put it. Naturally, it
hurt our feelings, what with us both
being sensitive sorts. We admitted
that we'd missed the chance of our
lifetimes and we regretted it
without any heckling from the likes
of Sir Eddie. We told the assembled
Naughts that we'd just done a dry
run preparatory to the end of the
current century.
"Balderdash and Poppycock,"
chortled Sir Jake, "Neither one of
you old scamps will see the end of
another century.
"If they can hang on for twelve
months they can see the end of the
current century, "Sir Bill stated
with conviction. The nineteenth x
Century don't end until December
31,2000!"
"Say what!?" Sir Boomer might
near swallered his Arbuckle -
Flagon and all "Where do you get
such weird theories?"

decades of observation. Plus - they

A man wanted in the shooting
death of a De Leon woman was cap-
tured by authorities without incident
in Florida last week, but returning
Charles Earl Jackson to Comanche
County for trial is going to take some
legal wrangling.
Jackson, 61, has elected to fight
extradition after being arrested by
police in Largo without incident.
Jackson is reported to have phoned
a female friend, who called police and
told them that Jackson had killed
someone in Texas.
Comanche County law enforce-
ment officers are reported to have
been following a credit card paper
trail and had been in contact with
Jackson's friends and acquaintances.
The woman who turned Jackson in
