Ken Branum of Hereford delights
in making up stories and passing
them along like they were true. He
loves to pull practical jokes on
'people. He once told some California
folks that brisket is most tender when
it comes from the left side of a cow
because in Texas cows move clock-
wise and the right side has all the
stress on it and is tougher.
When Ken was 17 years old he
and his family were visiting his
granddad over. New Year’s. Ken was
bored, so his grandfather handed him
his old musket rifle, some black pow-
der and 3 lead balls. Ken went
through the woods, saw nothing, and
fired all three shots into a tree.
“My granddaddy would have
been upset with me if he knew I did
than.” says Ken.
On the way back from his walk in
the woods. Ken noticed a small pond,
“and just beyond the pond there was
this beautiful 18 point buck,” says
Ken. “I dttirLl jcnow what to do. I had

deer. I knew if I bagged it, my daddy
and granddaddy would be real
pleased with me.
“I looked around and saw the ram-
rod. I put all the powder I had left
into that old gun and packed it in
there real good. Then 1 took that ram-
rod, jammed it down, took careful aim,
got the right trajectory and fired.
“That ramrod skimmed across the
water in that pond and went right
through the neck of that big deer. It
dropped immediately, I had to go see
that deer and retrieve the ramrod.

Dear De Leon Monitor
I got a copy of your paper Thurs-

of Mary Gerth. From the 911 opera-

Citizens of the Century
In last weeks paper we asked for
reader input for a listing of De Leon’s
outstanding contributors of the cen-
tury just past.
We’ve received several names,
but we’re not satisfied that we’ve
heard from everyone that might wish
to submit a name.
So, we’ve elected to extend the
deadline until the last issue in Janu-
ary, (I -27-00 edition). At that time we
hope to have a comprehensive cen-
sus of the folk who nurtured our com-
munity through its formative century.
To trigger your recall, we will let
you read the names of a few who
have received mention. If you can
think of others, we’d like you to let
us know. Let us hear at Box 50,76444,
fax 254/893-5578 or call us at 254/893-
6397 Or, if you’re downtown you can
stop in and let us know in person.
Thank you for your interest.

we’ve received. We’d like to hear you
ideas on the matter.

When I got there, I noticed the limit
of bass fish was on that ramrod like a
shish kabob. It apparently stabbed
the fish as it was dipping into the
water.
“To my surprise I also noticed the
ramrod had also killed a beautiful six
pound pheasant cock that happened
to be flying by just at the time and
place the ramrod was sailing through
the air. Man, I was so happy to get -
fish, pheasant and deer with just one
shot. 1 couldn’t wait to get back and
tell my family all about this hunting
trip. My granddad was going to be
so pleased.
“I picked up all the game and
started walking back to my
granddad’s house. It was a heavy load
and I was struggling to carry all of
it.”
“I got hot and decided to take a
rest. I took off my coat and laid it on
the ground and just sat there for
about ten minutes. When I got ready
to go, I picked up my coat and was
so surprised to see that I had smoth-
ered a covey of quail with my coat.
“1 started putting the quail in the
pockets of my hunting jacket and it
go so tight a button flew off. It went
about 25 yards and hit a rabbit.
“Boy, would I have a story to tell!”
“You know the sad part about all
this is I drug all this stuff home and
expected everybody to be happy with
me and impressed with my ability in
the wood.
“But my mother was mad at me
because I had lost the button off my
coat.”
Thank you
We wish to thank everyone that
