to finishing a degree is providing
inspiration to others, said Dami-

Department of Criminal Justice.
“We encourage and strengthen
those who we come into contact
with,” Guinn said while giving
a commencement address at the

Some former inmates who
have graduated from ACC and
UHCL have gone on to earn
master’s degrees and even start
their own businesses.
ACC President Dr. Christal
M. Albrecht spoke to the gradu-
ates and asked that they pursue
their education further.
“I want to say to you continue
on,” she said. “Congratulations
to each and every one of you.”
ACC offered the first college
classes to inmates at the Texas
Department of Corrections in
1965. ACC was the first institu-
tion of higher education in Texas
to offer college programs at the
Texas Department of Criminal
Justice. In 2016, ACC was one

pays off.”
UHCL grad Joshua Bayles
said education is a form of rein-
vention for someone who’s in-
carcerated.
“You think you’re never go-
ing to make it again,” he said.
“But we have brought ourselves
back into existence. There’s not
enough time for us to express our
gratitude for this privilege.”

He attended Amelia Elemen-
tary, Vincent Middle School
and Westbrook High School.
During his school years Sean
participated in football until his
junior year, Little League base-
ball , soccer and the Boy Scouts
of America. Sean earned the
rank of Eagle Scout during his
senior year of high school.
Sean was an active member
of First Christian Church (Dis-
ciples of Christ) in Beaumont
and attended church regularly.
He and his family are current
members of First United Meth-
odist Church in Alvin, Texas.
Through the traveling years the
family always found a church
home wherever they lived.
Sean started attending Lamar
University and soon discovered
that college life was not for
him at this stage of his life. He
joined the U.S. Army and was
stationed in Georgia and later
California and in 1988 he met
and married his lifelong part-
ner and wife, Sylvia Jean Trapp
Grubbs. After his commitment
to the Army, Sean and Sylvia
returned to Texas where Sean
attended Lamar University as
a welding major, working as a
welding inspector and Radio-
graphic Technician in Beau-
mont. Upon graduation with
a Degree in Welding Technol-
ogy, Sean and Sylvia moved to
Point Comfort, Texas and both
worked at the Formosa Plastics
Plant. Very soon, in 1992, a son
was born, and Gregory Allen
Grubbs became Sylvia’s full-

son, Justin Wade Grubbs, was

Pell program, which provides

TDCJ studies have shown that
the rate of recidivism, or chance
of return to prison, greatly de-
clines as an offender’s educa-
tional level increases. Offend-
ers, on average, have less than a
seventh-grade education.
Prior to enrolling in college
while in prison, each inmate
must first earn their high school
diploma or GED and pass all the
same entrance tests required for
every college student.
Guinn told the audience that
no matter how much adversity
a person may face, they always
have a chance to better them-
selves.
“Many successful people have
found opportunity in failure that
they may not have seen in more
fortunate circumstances,” he
his family then moved to Hous-
ton, where he attended Milby
High School. Joel’s first job was
delivering newspapers, where he
rode his bike around to get the
job done. He also worked at Sage
in the pet department where he
loved working with animals. At
the age of 17, he started his ca-
reer in the oil field. His parents
had to sign paperwork to allow
him to start this job. He grew up
quickly in this field and worked
very hard to move up the chain.
When Joel was not working, he
loved life, spending time with
family, the ones he loved most of
all. He enjoyed cooking out and
riding his Harley motorcycle.
Joel also had a special love for
his three, four-legged children
he called his babies: Harley,
Lucy and Davidson.
