MANVEL - The Manvel Lady Mavericks
seized control of both the fourth quarter and the
District 22-6A Girls’ Basketball race, Tuesday
night.
Manvel erupted for a decisive 19-4 run during
the final period to collect a 53-45 victory over
Pearland Dawson at the MHS Competition Gym.
The win puts the Manvel Girls (22-9 overall,
13-1 in district) in sole possession of first place
in the 22-6A Standings with just two games left
in the regular season. The Lady Mavs trailed
Dawson by a game a week ago, but the Lady
Eagles were upset at home Jan. 29 by Pearland to
tie the teams in the standings and open the door

While the Lady Mavs faced a seven-point hill
to climb at 41-34 with a little over five minutes
remaining, freshman point guard McKinzie
Green (15 points) and senior Imani Wiley both
heated up behind the arc. Green lofted a three-
pointer from NBA range to ignite the run.
Manvel Head Coach Bryan Harris also praised
his team’s defensive performance with senior
guard Ciara Hatch drawing four charging calls
on the other end.
“Dawson is a team that is physically, scrap-
py and good,” Harris said following the game.
“They do a good job of attacking the basket. We
were trying to play defense and stay in front of
them.
“Those charges by Ciara really pumped us up.
That’s the kind of stuff we need. We don’t have
the offensive juggernaut we’ve had in the past, so
we have to play with defense. Our fourth quarter
defense was huge.”
