On behalf ofthe current students, faculty,
staff and administration, I bring you
greetings from your Alma Mater. I
appreciate your interest in Tarleton
and involvement in the Tarleton Alumni
Association. We look forward to an exciting
2002-2003 academic year, and are proud to be
able to provide over 8,000 students with the
"Tarleton experience."
Your Alma Mater continues to grow. Our
enrollment has increased 26 percent over the
past five years. We experienced enrollment
growth of 7.8 percent this summer when
compared to last summer. Our preliminary
figures for fall 2002 show a sizeable
increase over last fall. This growth strongly
suggests "we must be doing it right."
Tarleton's budget for the 2003 fiscal year was
recently approved by The Texas A&M University
System Board of Regents. This budget
of $82,071,250 shows a minimal increase
(0.5%) over the current year's budget of
$81,644,728. The bleak economic condition of
the state and the nation attests to this minimal
increase, and until that changes, Tarleton will
face challenges. However, that will not prevent
us from continuing to provide quality and
excellence for our students.
The Board of Regents recently approved the
naming of the Student Development Center in
honor of one of our alums and longtime friends,
Dr. Barry B. Thompson. A "naming" celebration
is being planned, and you will receive more
information at a later date.
There are many other significant things going on
at your University that I think you can be proud
of. For instance:
* We have successfully completed our
$40 million Centennial Campaign for the
Twenty-First Century, raising over $42
million.I look forward to seeing you
2002.at Homecoming
Best wishes,

4 Our men's track team completed the 2002
season ranked 4th in the nation.
" We recently were awarded a $4 million
competitive grant from the USDA to
continue and expand our new national
Center for Agribusiness Excellence.
" We will have a grand opening celebration
of our new museum in Thurber this fall.
The W. K. Gordon Center for Industrial
History of Texas, Museum and Gallery is
the latest addition to our expanding
campus. With this celebration, we will also
introduce the holder of our first endowed
chair, Dr. T. Lindsay Baker. This is a $5.1
million project supported by our
Foundation, and funded primarily
through the W. K. Gordon Foundation in
Fort Worth.
" We have implemented a new one-card
system, known as the Texan Card. This
new electronic card, much like a debit card,
allows students, faculty and staff to
access products and services on and off
campus.
The list could go on and on. We have much for
which we should be thankful. I would like to
particularly give credit to our faculty and staff
for making Tarleton such a wonderful place to
live and learn. They are primarily responsible
for "creating a culture of excellence for our
students."00017 Z 41e
