nual Financial Report for
the fiscal year 2015 was
presented in a unquali-
fied report by Eric Carv-
er of Axley & Rode, LLP
at the June 13 meeting
of the Commissioners’
Court.

chosen for-
mer Hous-
ton County
Judge Lonnie Hunt as
its new Executive Direc-
tor. The board formed a
search committee after the
retirement of its previous
executive director. It rec-
ommended Hunt to the full
board out of 26 applicants.
He replaces Walter Dig-
gles, who resigned after
a federal indictment this
spring.
Following a career in
broadcasting, Hunt was
elected Houston County
Judge. After serving a term
as DETCOG’s First Vice
President, he was elect-
ed DETCOG President
in 2011. During his term
he was elected First Vice
President of the Texas As-
sociation of Regional Coun-
cils. Most recently he has
served as a County Rela-
tions Officer for the Texas
Association of Counties.
The Deep East Texas
Council of Governments
(DETCOG) was formed
under enabling legislation
passed by the Texas Legis-
lature in 1965. DETCOG is
a political subdivision of the
State of Texas. It is a vol-
untary association of local
governments established
to assist them in planning
for common needs, coop-
erating for mutual benefit
and coordinating sound re-
gional development It has
none of the regulatory or
taxing authority of cities or
counties, but is subject to
state laws governing open
meetings, access to public
records and the conduct of
public officials. The DET-
COG Region includes the
counties of Angelina, Hous-
ton, Jasper, Nacogdoches,
Newton, Polk, Sabine, San
Augustine, San Jacinto,
Shelby, Trinity and Tyler.

The annual What-
A-Melon Festival re-
turns to Shelby Coun-
ty on July 6-9 at the
old courthouse square
in downtown Center.
The fun includes the
Miss What-A-Melon
pageant, largest wa-
termelon, seed spit-
ting contest, carnival
rides, arts and crafts,
food vendors and live
entertainment. The
event kicks off with
the Official Watermel-
on Cutting at 6 p.m.
on Wednesday Full

oil and gas wells. These
preliminary figures are
based on production vol-
umes reported by opera-
tors and will be updated
as late and corrected
production reports are
received. Production re-
ported to the Commis-
sion for the same time pe-
riod last year, April 2015,
was: 69,595,733 barrels
of crude oil preliminarily,
updated to a current fig-
ure of 90,324,013 barrels;
and 587,178,094 mcf of
total gas preliminarily,

Will Lucas, president of Shelby Savings Bank,
was saluted by staff and customers on Friday,
when he had another birthday. He is a member
of the Texas Bankers Association (TBA) and
TBA Community Bankers Council, and chair-
man of the Texas Bankers Foundation. He is
also a member of the Center Rotary Club. Lu-
cas received a bachelor's degree from Stephen
F. Austin State University, and is a graduate of
the Southern Methodist University Southwest-
