October 31-November 1, and
November 7-8. On these week-
ends only, the number of ve-
hicles allowed to enter the Mc-
Kittrick Canyon area at any
one time will be limited to the
capacity of the parking area at
the canyon mouth. After the
110-car parking lot is full, en-
try into the canyon will be
closed until space opens up
from vehicles leaving. Park of-
ficials believe this change is ne-
cessary to ensure the safety of
visitors and to protect the can-
von's unique qualities. Alterna-
tive areas in the park for view-
ing fall colors are at Smith
Spring, reached by a one-mile
trail; Devil's Hallway in Pine
Springs Canyon, reached by a
two-mile hike; and Upper Dog
Canyon.
Organized bus groups planning
trips to McKittrick Canyon dur-
ing the three main fall color
weekends are also asked to call
ahead (915-828-3251) to make
reservations, as there will be a
limit on the number of groups
which can be accommodated
during these three weekends. .
McKittrick Canyon is a day-
use area, and is normally open
from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. only

the weekends of October 24-25, and animals found along the
McKittrick Canyon stream
bank, visitors are asked to re-
main on the established trails.
Pets should also be left at home,
since they are not permitted
on park trails. Visitors should
bring canteens of drinking wa-
ter and they may want to pack
a lunch and sunscreen. Drive-
in campgrounds are available
at Pine Springs and Dog Can-
yon for visitors wishing to
camp overnight. Picnic sites
are available both at McKit-
trick and Pine Springs.
Further information or dir-
ections to various areas of the

NATIONAL PARK FALL
COLOR VIEWING
OPPORTUNITIES
ANNOUNCED
Fall colors in the Upper Dog
Canyon area on the north side
of Guadalupe Mountains Na-
tional Park are expected to
reach their peak around the
middle of October while those
in McKittrick Canyon and Pine
Springs Canyon on the park's
south side will probably peak
near the end of October or in
early November.
The color changes begin first
at higher elevations in the cen-
tral mountain backcountry and
then work-down into the can-
yons, with McKittrick Canyon
usually turning last, according
to Acting Park Superintendent
Bob Peters.
Despite the fact that a five to
six mile round trip hike is re-
quired to see the colors in
McKittrick Canyon, crowds
have become increasingly large
on weekends in this area of the
park during the fall color per-
iod. Because of this, visitors are
being encouraged to plan week-
day trips whenever possible,
and to consider alternative vi-
sits to other areas of the park
as well.
