Dnr Ann Landers: You have
made frequent references in
your column to the
deterioration of education in the
UJ. public schools. Granted,
not all teachers are well-trained
and caring, but the big problem
is not the teachers — it’s the
children.
I have taught school for 27
years. We spend at least 40
percent of our classroom time
disciplining students. You
would not believe how many

DEAR DR. BLAKER -
My 70-year-old grandmother
suffers from Parkinson’s
disease 1 care about her a
great deal and it is difficult
for me to provide the moral
support the doctors say she
needs She shakes constantly
and her speech and
handwriting are very poor. I
understand that there is no
cure for her condition which
makes it all the more diffi-
cult to be strong for her.
DEAR READER - How-
ever difficult it may be, you
should continue giving her
moral support. Your encour-
agement is very important

Parkinson's disease is a
devastating condition that
attacks the victim’s motor
coordination. The cause of
the disease is as yet
unknown but it is believed to
result from the degeneration
of dopamine-secreting neu-
rons in the brain. This
explains the therapeutic
effect of L-DOPA, a medi-
cine that is converted to
dopamine in the brain and
therefore alleviates some of ‘
the symptoms.
A set of interesting exper-
iments are now being con-
ducted that may help even
more. Embryonic dopamine-
secreting cells are being sur-
gically implanted in rat
