Calhoun County Independent
School District was represented by
five local teachers recently at the
Annual State Convention of the
Texas Classroom Teachers Associa
tion Linda Winters, Lynda Frazier.
Jane Treybig. Sandra Barton and
Joy Wehmeyer were among the 800
participants during the yearly event
held Feb 10-11 in Austin
TCTA is a professional teachers
organization which represents more
than 25,000 public school teachers
across the state. Its annual conven-
tion provides delegates an oppor-
tunity to become better informed on
current education issues and to
make policy decisions for the
Association.
Teachers attended a full day of
mini-conterence programs on a
variety of professional topics, in-
cluding the Texas Teacher Ap-
praisal System, student perfor-
mance accountability, mentoring
and interning, cooperative learning,
the Select Committees on Education
and Tax Equity, and the 71st
Legislature.
The keynote address on ‘The
Future of Education in Texas ' was
delivered by the Honorable Henry
Cisneros. Mayor of San Antonio, who
praised capability and dedication of
teachers throughout the state
Rebecca Canning, former vice
chairman of the State Board of
Education and chairman of the
Long-Range Planning Committee,
was the featured speaker at the
TCTA Awards Breakfast. Canning
shared her experiences and perspec-
tives as a State Board memeber and
urged teachers to increase their in-
volvement in the education profes-
sion.
The Association presented its an-
nual Fnend of Education Awards to
Senator Cyndi Taylor Krier of San
Antonio in the State Official
category and to Estella Cuellar of
McAllen in the Private Citizen
category. Senator Krier was
honored for her outstanding service
in the State Legislature on behalf of
teachers and education, while Ms
Cuellar was recognized for a
lifetime of contributions to educa-
tion.
Convention participants were
treated to the Texas premiere per-
formance of "Let Me Teach, " a play
written and performed by former
Texas drama teacher David Mar-
shall Marquis. Fresh from a na-
tional tour and rave reviews off
Broadway, "Let Me Teach" echoed
the joys, frustrations, and reasons
for being a professional classroom
teacher.
State President Susan Crocker of
Grand Prairie presided over the con-
vention.
