trainings, and performing duties
such as laying out hoses and re-
placing air bottles.
During the Tulia wildfire, the
juniors refilled the tanks on the
water trucks, helped bring food
and water into the fire station,
and later, cleaned up the fire
trucks and equipment. At this
time, none of the current JFF are
certified to be on the scene of a
fire, but they assist in all other
ways that they can, according
to Rick Fikes, who has taken up
the mantle of leading the .IFF
program.
Fikes said teens are eligible
to join the group from the time
they become freshmen in high
school until they turn 18. At age
18, they are eligible to become
full-fledged volunteer fire fight-
ers once they have had the prop-
er training. The program abides
by the "no pass - no play" rules,
and places priority on school and
family. For instance, a .IFF may
be excused from a drill night if
they have a ballgame or contest.
The Tulia VFD maintains an
open-door policy for the .IFF,
who are able to respond to 9-1-1

Tulia youth program develops future fire fighters
By Brandy Reed
Recent wildfires, grave loss-
es and the Panhandle spirit of
neighbors helping neighbors
have garnered much coverage in
the news lately. Lesser known,
perhaps, is the role Tulia teens
played in helping the communi-
ty on the day of the Tulia Pris-
on Complex fire. From running
door-to-door to help evacuate
the Mackenzie addition to push-
ing nursing home residents to
safety in their wheelchairs, local
teens showed courage and deter-
mination in service to their com-
munity; traits that are desirable
in future fire fighters.
The Tulia Volunteer Fire De-
partment has a program called
the Junior Fire Fighters (JFF),
which is designed for such
brave, young men and women.
After learning about the JFF
program in New Deal several
years ago, Fire Chief Johnny
Daniels became interested in
starting a similar program in
Tulia. The group has grown to
include nine members who ac-
tively support the Tulia VFD
by attending drill meetings and

first responding vehicles, if ex-
tra water tankers or vans are re-
quired and there is room, the JFF that the department will accept
can go out on scene. When prop- new applications at the begin-
erly certified, they also can par-
ticipate in defensive measures,
such as spraying water on areas
or structures that are not on the the Tulia Fire Station or contact
main fire front. Rick Fikes at (806) 577-2683.
