_ PROFANITY DAMNED
Acting smart in Chicago, Ma-
jor General Butler walked up to
a microphone, where he was to
address the Legionnaires," and
the first thing he said was,
"Damn.”
"I don’t know whether this
thing works or not," he assured
the Legionnaires. Feeling like it
did he began over, thusly:
"Well, damn it, the last time

The hard-boiled, gray-haired
general—who apparently thinks
a fellow has to cus« to reveal
trait of masculinity—evidently
didn’t fail to throw in plenty of
sizzling expletives. You can gd
away with anything, even mur-
der, in Chicago. , ,
Frequent resorting to profan-
ity, however, is nothing short of
an index to one’s vocabulary
Cultured, educated and refined
people do not have to cuss.
They can express themselves
clearly and far more forcefully
by the proper use of pure Eng-
lish. If you do not think this is
possible, read some of Sincla.r
Lewis ’writings . . . some of th>’
books that are outlawed becaus■:

not have to resort to the mean
ingless "hells" and "damns,’
w’ords that are entirely blanks sv
far as expressions are concerned
. . . merely giving the listener,
if any, to think whatsoever he
pleases.
Persons that write plays
should be told about that. Pro-
fanity is making its way into
public tolerance so rapidly that
the world is in need of a group
of old scholars—like some of
those who came to Texas when
the republic was founded—to
reappear in our school system
and revamp the fundamentals of
our educational foundation.
That might help some. An
other uplifting influence W’ould
be, not the cussing papa and
mama, but the old-fashioned
parents who would box their
children’s ears every time they
heard them swear around the

Tills is the” most natural thing In
the world because John scored his
first screen-hit in the silent version
of Stevenson's Story. That ftiML.bUck

While Warners admit that nego-
tiations are on, they say that noth.
Ing can be decided until Barrymore
returns from his current fishing

Of course, It is foolish to predict
anything at such an early date
One can only hope that the two
companies will get together on a
swell idea for a picture. With Bar-
A -rymore playing his original roles,
and with the public's grooving taste
for weird stories, “Dr. Jekyll an-1
Mr. Hyde” ought to pack theatres
from Hollywood to Tinibuctoo.

The fact that the Texas Long-

outstanding news item for the

teams in the Southwestern Con-

twice in nineteen or twenty
years that they can beat Disch’s
teams, tends to add an element
of interest to the annual college

DODGIN GTHE KITCHEN
More than a dozen women
flyers met in Dallas Sunday to
enjoy a racing program and to
do their bit to convince the
world, if possible, that aviation
holds a place for the girl pilot.
Maybe so, but the women arc
about to run this business of
equal rights and equal opportun-
ities into the ground.
Not so very long ago, people
used to ask when a girl in the
community married, “Well, can
tha .tfellow make a living for
her?” So many bridegrooms fail-
ed to make a living that gradual-
ly girls chose a career in the bus-
iness world to the r*1” -
wife. Gradually tli
spread until today
rivals for nearly ey . _
held by man in commercial life
•—and many women, it must be
admitted, are getting away with
their jobs excellent.
Thai’s the main reason why
we have something like 6,000,-
000 or 7,000,000 unemployed
men in the Nation today.
Taking women out of industry
would not necessarily end de-
pression, but it would solve the
unemployment '♦question — for
men. Then it would be up to
die men to make a living when
they marry ... a fellow refus-
ing to do so should be ridden
out of town on a rail, like some
communities used to talk about
doing. i
I"» Before our old fashioned
home life is re-established, our
charming and gracious women
must quit dodging the kitchen.
They must quit trying to beat
mere man out of his place in the
business world. They may do
it. .. they have already done it.

Sliding swiftly up the East River, the new cruiser Omaha, of the U. S.
Navy, is photographed here from the vantage point of one of New
York’s bridges. The Omaha is shown heading for the Brooklyn Navy
Yard where it joined two other warships at anchor while gobs, spick
and span in their “dress blues,” enjoy giving the port a treat.

An attractive woman living alone
in this charming ago of liberty
must of necessity provide herself
with some adequate shadow deflec-
tor for summer. The “Pantie Petti-
coat” seems to be the new propa-
ganda racket. The cut is literally
lifted from a full pajama trouser,
the fiont of the petticoat being full,
and the pack actually shadow-
proof.
The pantie-petticoat is short like
an underskirt should be, and when
worn with a tiny, uplift brassiere,
one's summer lingerie ensemble is
presumably complete. However,
inasmuch as thi.i leaves no veiling
whatsoever over mademoiselle's
equator, 1 shall probably have to
touch upon the Stiti'jeet agpin In a
later issue, if there seerr|s to be too
much howling and yelljjag. of com„
