after heroic fight
On Monday night Larry Donaldson
lost his battle with a serious illness
after complications that arose from
the flu back in October. Larry’ will
over the deaths of his
father, a sister and a
brother, Lamar moved
to Texas in 1835. He
immediately declared
for Texas Independence
and returned to Georgia
to settle personal affairs.
While in Georgia, he
learned of the fall of the
Alamo and the defeat of
Goliad. He rushed back
to Texas and joined the
Texas army as a private.
In a skirmish with the

withdraw as a candidate
for reelection in 1830. In
1832, he was defeated as
a states’ rights candidate
for the U.S. Senate; in
1833, he was admitted
to the Georgia bar;
and, in 1834, he was,
again, defeated as a
states' rights candidate
for the U.S. Senate.

The Whitewright Lady Tigers faced the Pottsboro
Lady Cardinals in the regional quarterfinals on
Tuesday, February 21 and in a last minute 3-pointer,
Pottsboro moved to the next round of playoffs. “Our

In early life he became
an expert horseman
and a proficient fencer.
Although he briefly
attended private
academies, he rebelled
against the routine of
formal schooling and
pursued a course of self-
education. He became an
insatiable reader, a gifted
speaker, a skilled writer,
a talented artist, a student
of ancient history, and
knowledgeable of the
liberal arts and sciences.
A descendent of
French Huguenots who
fled Europe to escape
persecutions, Lamar
developed a keen craving
for individual freedoms
and a growing distrust
of expanding federal
powers. For a time, he
published a newspaper
that printed poetry
which he had written
and expressed his strong
feelings for states rights.
In 1829, Lamar was
elected to a term in the
Georgia Senate. Sorrow

Shortly after San
Jacinto, Lamar was

the Community
Builder Award during
a ceremony held on
December 18,2017. June
Gail Purdorn was the
recipient of the Masonic
Community Builder
Award and Richard
Knabe, Whitewright
ISD Band Director, and
Debbie Yates, sponsor
for the Tom Bean SADD
Club, were the recipients
of the Mirabeau B.
Lamar Award.
The Community
Builder Award was
designed by the Grand
Lodge Texas to enable
the Whitewright Lodge
to recognize outstanding
non-Masons who have
distinguished themselves
through their service to
the community, to the
local, state or national
government, to their
house of worship, or
to humanity. Thus,
the award is presented
to individuals who,
although they have
never been initiated into
Masonry, have followed
the same precepts, ideals
and standards that have
been established for
Masonic behavior.
The Community
Builder Award is not
necessarily designed
to be given only to the
obvious leaders of the
community, those in
the limelight, although
they certainly must
be considered. Often
times the award is
bestowed upon a man
or woman who, year in
and year out, quietly
and without fanfare,
show their devotion to
their community and
its people without the
expectation of awards or
honors.
The Mirabeau B.
Lamar Award is named
