Gov. AUan Shivers, although he
is opposed to Democratic nominee
Stevenson because of hi. stand for
federal ownership of the oil-rich

to order two Democratic tickets on

The convention, after a heated
debate, complied with Shivers' re-

Truman Charged
With Playing To
Commies Hands
Bv JOHN' L. STEELE
WASHINGTON', Sept. 12 <U.R>— I
Sen. Alexander Wiley said Friday
President Truman "played into the
Communists' hands" by claiming
that a Republican victory in No-
vember would mean an isolationist |
Congress.
Mr. Truman told his news con- |
ference Thursday that the change
in administration urged by Dwight j
D. Eisenhower would give the na-
tion an "isolationist Republican I
Congress" that will not mean |
peace.
The statement angered Wiley,
ranking Republican on the Senate
Foreign Relations committee, and j
Sen. John W. Bricker,
Wiley, who will head the key
committee if Republicans gain con-
trol of the Senate in November,
claimed that the President's re-
marks served only "to create fear
nd confusion in Europe" about
what might happen to U. S. fore-
ign policy after election day.
He pointed out that at the very
time the President spoke, the Yoict
of America was claiming that
American foreign policy will con-
tinue uninterrupted regardless of
the election results.
The Wisconsin st.iator told the
United "Press that Mr. Truman's
words were ill-chosen because the
President:
1. Ignored such "Republican
champions of international leader-
ship" as Sen. H. Alexander Smith
(N. J.) and former Sen. John Sher-
man Cooper (Ky.), both of whom
are locked in election contests this
year.
2. Ignored the services of Repub-
licans John Foster Dulles, Warren
R. Austin—both former senators
— and Sen. Charles W. Tobey
(N. H.>.
3. By creating "fear and con-
fusion" in Europe, "only plays into
the Communists" hands becuutte
the Reds would like Europe to be-
lieve that America's promises
might not be kept and that there is
no point in having faith in Ameri-
can leadership.
Bricker told reporters that Dem-
ocrats are raising a "phony issue"
by claiming a split between Eisen-
hower's foreign policy views and
those of some mid-western senators
including his own. Bricker claimed
that on a basis of Eisenhower's
foreign affairs pronouncements to
date, there are no basic differences
so far as he is concerned.

PORT ISABEL. Sept. 12 <UJ _
A shrimp trawler, the Buccaneer,
was blown high and dry upon the
beach IS miles north of Port Isa-
bel as rain and thunderstorms were
reported throughout the eastern
hatf of the Lower Rio Grande Val-
ley Thursday.
Rainfall was topped by an unof-
ficial 5-i> inches at Brownsville.
The U. S. Weather Bureau meas-
urement at its station three miles
outside the city was only 3.10
inches.
Los Fresnos, also in Cameron
county, reported 4.25 inches of
rain.
The wrecking of the trawler was
the only damage reported in the
Valley, however. Its two crewmen
were not injured and stayed aboard
the stranded vessel until radio
equipment could be removed.
A Coast Guard PB2Y, a Navy
helicopter and a jeep from the
Port Isabel Coast Guard station
were dispatched to the scene to aid
the crewmen.
