^T^HESE things happen from using the wrong
-fi- kind of oil for your Ford. Excessive operating
costs. Needless break-downs. Preventable repairs.
This is why— in the Ford, one oil has two dis-
tinct jobs: First, it must lubricate the motor. Second,
it must lubricate the transmission. Each job requires
entirely different characteristics in the same oil.
To solve this dual problem of Ford lubrication
Tide Water engineers created Veedol Forzol—a
different kind of oil. And thy best proof that Veedol
Forzol solves the problem is the fact that it is now
givirig over a million Ford owners these eight
economies in operation:

it a rough and bumpy trip down there

to the stressing need of this county, <'complishment?
(C) It is a matter of pride to
Shelby county that the Timpson-Ea-
gle Mills highway is to be built. It is
a feat of expert mathametics, howev-
er, that puts this $61,000 into the
maintenance column, or includes it in
a discussion of highway maintenance.
(D) We believe, with you, that
Mr. Byron Rudd is a very capable and
efficient road foreman, and extend
congratulations to the county that his
services have been secured here.
(E) We also are pleased with your
work in resurfacing stretches of the * You will, we believe, always” find'
San Augustine, Nacogdoches and
Logansport highways. Without this
work these highways would have been
impassable in bad weather. However,
we don’t believe other roads should
be neglected while this work is being
carried on.
(F) By your own statement in this
section, you imply that the county did ;
not secure enough work when $31,-1 ciate this discussion and our position
We are in-1 as being always anxious to do any-

You will note we have disregarded
the bombastic tone and antagonistic
attitude of your letter, which we as-
sume was intended to impress higher

(B) Surely, Mr. Maddox, you are
not claiming any credit to yourself or
your administration for the contsruc-
tion of the Flat Fork Bridge. We in
Shelby county know that this con-
readers of this paper will agree that '
the article of last week was unusually ’
mild and eminently fair to you and ■
your organization. It’s not argu-
ment we want, it’s action.
1. (A) The fact that this county is
getting $76,750 this year for main- :
tenance, which you say is more than
other counties in your district, does
not mean that this is all that is need-
ed, or that the roads are in good
shape. By your own statement, this
I.

clined to agree with you.
That, however, i
Shelby county could be
value received for every dollar
being spent, and still not be get-
ting a square deal, simply because
enough dollars are net being spent.
Are you satisfied when you say that
you are doing better work than the
i Panola Construction company? Are
the highways to be used as a political
weapon, and the goal accomplished
when you can successfully belittle
your predeccessors? Or are we to
put the roads back into first class
shape, regardless of who got them
into the present conditions? The
Champion has never sympathized
with “Ma and Jim” and is an enthus-
iastic supporter of the Moody admin-
istration. (Let’s remember who in-
jected. politics into this discussion.)
We believe you are doing better than
Ma’s organization, but we also be-
lieve there is room for improvement
—and that poor, old Shelby county,
whose highways have suffered much,
needs much more improvement yet.
That may mean we must have more
money. If it does, let’s get busy and
get it. j
(2) You object because we stated
“it is doubtful if this road (the Ten-
aha highway) has been bladed in the
past three months.” My dear Mr.
Maddox, this was putting it mildly.
To anyone who bumped
“highway” prior to June 1, it was
doubtful if it had EVER been
j visited with a drag. It was awful.
(You will recall that in our con-
I versation of June 2, you stated
you had not traveled ovei’ this
particular highway in the past 30
days or so. V^e had. It is a source
of genuine satisfaction to note that
this highway was bladed aftei- the re-
cent rains, and that one can now
drive off the pavement onto this high-
way without danger of overturning
his car.
(3) That is certainly a fine piece
of resurfacing work you are doing on
the'lower end of the San Augustine;
